Assuming you are driving this display via an HDMI cable, then you just need to set the resolution in /boot/config.txt (the file config.txt in the image's first partition, which you can edit on any PC).
I think the 4" waveshare is a 480x800 display, so just add the following lines to config.txt (mostly taken from the waveshare wiki):
Code:
hdmi_drive=1
hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt 480 800 60 6 0 0 0
display_rotate=3

If you have a lower res 4" display, adjust the hdmi_cvt values accordingly. You can see the meaning of these config.txt values here.

If you have trouble, also comment out the "dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d,cma-256" line, to use the default framebuffer.

honeymak,

Code:
crossdev -t arm64
isn't quite right.
It needs to be
Code:
crossdev -t aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu

That should build a gcc-6.3 cross toolchain.

honeymak.

Code:
wgetpaste /var/log/portage/cross-aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu-binutils.log

and tell us the link.

You may need to
Code:
emerge wgetpaste
before you can do that.

As far as I can see, all your posts in this thread are within the last couple of days. None of those posts seem to provide the information that NeddySeagoon requested. The only log I see is the summary log that tells you what logs you should give us. If I missed it, please provide a [post] link back to the post in which you provided the required information.

@Sakaki (or anyone else who has experience on this): Do you have zswap enabled in kernel on your image? I wonder if it's of any advantage to use zswap, or does it just choke up the CPU when it starts to compress pages on RAM? I remember you can also change the compression algorithm...

@honeymak: Please use the code- tags when pasting logs etc...

honeymak,

A few things, that's not the log I asked for. We need to see the binutils build log, so we can see what broke.
Code:
$ eix crossdev
[I] sys-devel/crossdev
     Available versions:  20151026-r1{tbz2} (~)20160602{tbz2} (~)20160602-r1{tbz2}

You are using the stable crossdev, I use the testing crossdev.
We both have the same default/linux/amd64/13.0/no-multilib profile.
You are using gcc-5.4.0 on your build host to build a gcc-6.3 cross compiler. That should word.

The switch to gcc-5.4.0 from gcc-4.x demands that you rebuild all your C++ code.
Did you follow the news item, if not, that's a problem.

Code:
CFLAGS="-march=native -mtune=native -fomit-frame-pointer -O3 -pipe"

Global -O3 is a very bad idea. It enables some optimisations that can affect the results of floating point calculations.
It turns on optimisations that make the compiled code bigger in an attempt to make it faster.
That's OK if the working set still fits into the CPU cache. If not, you get 'cache thrashing' where data that is needed immediately displaces data that will be needed in fractions of a second, causing that data to be fetched from main memory, which is 100s of times slower that CPU cache.
-O3 should only be used on a file by file basis where
a) you don't care about floating point results (or they are known to be unaffected.
b) where the working set size growth actually still delivers a speed improvement.

Zucca,

Yes, I use zswap on the Pi.
The Pi is IO impoverished. For bigger packages that have to be built with <j4, it has a spare core, or two, so CPU power for running the compression is not a problem.

Thanks Neddy.

Two more questions:
  • Have you set the percentage of RAM where zswap starts to compress if it is exceeded?
  • Which compression method do you use?

btw, are there any generic routines for cross compile stuff other than using crossdev?
i mean what's the general workflow to cross compile for arm64 or any other cpu architecture?
thanks
:oops:

any step by step reference or websites?

i found that i have made mistake about crossdev command args.
i can build the toolchain by crossdev now.

but i have another question now
how to emerge for arm64 in my x86 gentoo pc without distcc?
i mean i'd like to setup my x86 gentoo pc as binhost

honeymak,

The wiki has an example using the Raspberry Pi 1, armv6j-hardfloat-linux-gnueabi.
Where that page says armv6j-hardfloat-linux-gnueabi, you use aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu for arm64 on a 64 bit Pi.

Where it says Build the base system ... It can be built from scratch ... Its overly 'optimistic'
You can build most of a stage3 and lots of other things with a pure cross compile.
Perl and other things that build and execute code in the course of the build, will not cross compile.
Cross compiling gcc itself (the binary to run on the Pi) is difficult too.

There is another complication for building the stage3. The DEPENDS in ebuilds for the @system set are not complete. That's a deliberate
design decision to break all the circular dependencies that would otherwise occur. Its normally not a problem as the @system is considered to always be installed.
However, when you start cross building @system, /usr/aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu/ is empty, so portage gets the build order incorrect and things fail for missing
dependencies. That's a feature. Several runs of
Code:
aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu-emerge @system
will fill in the gaps, as much as its going to.

cross distcc is the path of least resistance.

When you build things for arm64, the packages will be in /usr/aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu/packages/ unless you change that.

I saw a video on you tube where a guy sends a command to the RPi3 firmware (from a OS that's on the SDcard) to enable booting from USB directly. The only drawback was that RPi3 "probes" the USB longer than SDCard. Around 5 seconds.

Anyone tried this?

Zucca,

I understand that
a) its not reversable
b) needs a suitable CPU
as it involves fusing a fuseable link in the CPU. If it doesn't work properly, your Pi is scrap.

I'm not short of small microSD cards, so its not worth the risk.
I have /boot on the SD card and everything else on a USB SSD.
However, it would be good with the upstream kernel as that won't drive the Pi microSD interface yet.

Thanks Neddy.

I remember back in 90's it was quite common that if a control board of household appliance (washing machine, dishwasher...) had to replaced, the service guy needed to cut some resistors off or cut some of, so called, the teeths off from the PCB so that the control board then matched the appliance being repaired. Knowing what each tooth or resistor (bit basically) did, one could add new features to the appliance. In around 2000's came all the programmable microcontrollers and the game was lost. :)
I guess the microchips nowdays have still these kinds of "teeths", "resistors", fuseable links that are triggered via software. The main difference is that even with a soldering iron you cannot reverse the setting. :\

Zucca,

It makes you wonder what other functionality is hidden there too.

Hi Guys,
I am coming to ask another question.
It's recommended NOT to use -march=native -mtune=native for RPi3 distcc,
But what if I firstly use the RPi3 as the distcc client and other RPi3 as the distcc server?
I mean maybe I am having 1 RPi3 client and several, say 3-5, RPi3 server?
Will this work?
Just wondering whether I will be buying more RPi3s :twisted: :oops: :roll:

honeymak,

distcc detects that -march=native is in use and no longer distributes, since getting back native code for some other arch leads to a bit of a mess.
Old versions of distcc don't do this check :)

To use distcc, ask the system to be helped what -march=native means and put that in CFLAGS.
You need gcc-6 on arm64 for that to work.

Why not use your desktop to help the Pi? Research crossdev.
The Raspberry Pi 3 64 bit Install guide shows how to build the cross toolchain, and use it for the kernel.
You add normal distcc to the mix and ensure that identical gcc is selected on the Pi and the helper(s), then it just works.
