I have Aion running in Linux Mint 18 with the Cinnamon desktop in a reasonable manner, there are some problems to be solved which I will expand on.

I have run it on Core 2 Duo with 3GB of RAM, and currently on a Xeon 3430 with 8GB of RAM, in both cases I am using a HD 7970 GHz video card (aka R9 280x) with the open source Radeon driver which is the only option for that card currently on Linux Mint 18.

I used the current staging release of Wine which was 19.18 at the time.

To do the install I followed these instructions which I got from WineHQ.

Creating a prefix
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.aion winecfg

Downloading the latest release of winetricks from:
https://wiki.winehq.org/Winetricks

Installed the following using winetricks
WINEPREFIX=~/.aion ./winetricks baekmuk cambria comctl32 consolas constantia corefonts d3dx9_26 d3dx9_28 d3dx9_31 d3dx9_35 d3dx9_36 d3dx9_39 d3dx9_42 d3dx9_43 d3dx9 directx9 dotnet20 droid eufonts ie8 liberation lucida msls31 opensymbol pngfilt tahoma takao unifont vcrun2010 wenquanyi winhttp wininet wsh56vb xact_jun2010 xact xinput xmllite vcrun2005

Install the game
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.aion wine AionInstaller.exe

The performance is modest, about 15fps in Ariel Sanctuary, gets much better when you move away from that town into less cluttered areas of the map, it gets up to about 40fps. Quite playable.

Now, the problems.
After exactly an hour of play, the fps slows down to a slide show, about 1-2fps, unplayable, the the game fps still display a good number, so the game doesn't think it's broken. Quiting the game and restarting it does not fix the problems, restarting the computer does, and you get another hour of reasonable play.

I have no idea what is causing the problem. On the weekend I will try rolling back to Linux Mint 17 with the old AMD proprietary fglrx drivers instead of the radeon one to see if that makes a difference.

There is another small problem where the right mouse button can cause the camera to jerk clockwise or vertically if you are running using the keys at the same time, it's annoying but not a show stopper.

Why am I using Linux?

Because NCSoft has yet to fix a serious game crashing problem they introduced 18mths. or so ago, that effects Windows 7 32bit users in graphically intensive area with a lot of players, or when flying eg. in a wind tunnel. It's a well reported problem that remains unsolved. On the same hardware Linux is fine in these graphic intensive areas, slow fps but it does not crash like Windows 7 32bit does (tested on another PC with nVidia 550GTX which crashes too so it's not windows drivers or hardware)

Default Re: Progress on Aion under Linux Wine
The 5.1 update broke my install of Aion under Linux Mint 18 which was fine on Aion 5.0

This article has the fix.

http://pastebin.com/uNaNgRnZ

The only part I had to do to fix my existing install was to get the latest version of the winetricks script and run it with the options described.

The vcrun2013 install gave an error so I removed it from the winetricks flags and let wine use whatever vcrun version that was already installed.
