I recently did a full system update, and the gentoo default has switched from the old(er) "intel" xorg driver to the "modeswitching" driver.
So, after a bit of fiddling to get it sort-of-working again I have serious performance losses.

intel i7-6770HQ, skull canyon nuc:
glmark2 used to spit out a score around 1800-2000 with the "intel" driver
but now with the "modeswitching" driver it's down to 500-600.
I.e. a drop of 66-75% in 3D performance.

Any idea what could be wrong?

I tried manually installing the old "intel" driver again, and I'm back to the old glmark2 scores, so it's probably not something else from the system update.

Loosing >50% of 3D together with the TearFree option with "intel" "sna" driver is painful.

Attaching the device section and Xorg.0.log for "modesetting" driver
and an xrandr to show the monitor layout (spanning 4784x3840 total screen)

Code:

Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Iris-Pro-580"
    Driver         "modesetting"
    Option         "AccelMethod"    "glamor"
    Option         "DRI"            "3"
    Option         "Monitor-DP-1"   "HP-LP2065"
    Option         "Monitor-DP-2"   "Acer-XD1270D"
    Option         "Monitor-DP-3"   "Dell-P2415Q"
EndSection

snipped xrandr

Code:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 5160 x 3840, maximum 8192 x 8192
DP-3 connected primary 2160x3840+1600+0 left (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 527mm x 296mm
   3840x2160     60.00*+  29.98
   ...
DP-1 connected 1600x1200+0+1024 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 408mm x 306mm
   1600x1200     60.00*+
   ...
DP-2 connected 1400x1050+3760+1024 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768      60.00 +  85.00    75.03    70.07
   ...

From the log it seems that dri2 is loaded instead of dri3, can that be what's causing the huge drop?
Feels rude to paste such a long code block. Anyway I can "fold" it into a smaller scrollable container?

Yes, fairly sure, otherwise I'd expect abysmal 3D marks.

Here's the glxinfo -B output:

I've read that the modesetting driver is a bit slower than the old intel driver, but I was not expecting ca 3x,
which leads me to think I have something off with my setup.

Anyone else got some comparative benchmarks to share ?

One thought is that it performs so poorly because I have three monitors connected,
spanning a total framebuffer(?) size of 4784x3840, with the height due to a 4K in portrait mode (love my coding and writing like that). This is a bit of an edge case setup and could be poorly supported perhaps?

Hi, I just want to share the information, that I also suffer under a noticable 3D performance drop.

I've got a Intel i3, with HD4000.

Recently, I updated my complete system after 6 month, without touching the upgraded kernel config with any GPU related parts.

I could not figure out what happend/changed (because I had several bigger problems), until I read your issue netjiro. So I think my system switched also from former intel to the "modeswitching" driver.

Can you give me an hint how I get back to the old state? Then I can also provide some benchmarks...

Use one at the time, obviously. From my Skylake box.

The old intel driver comes with x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel.

Also check out https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel

My device section in xorg.conf is similar to the one posted by Jaglover.
Code:

I will do, and edit here my outcome with glmark2.

Currently, I try what my actual settings are, and which changes I will do and how the perform.

/Edit: Okay, here is my configuration:

SandyBridge Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3120M CPU @ 2.50GHz with an HD4000

I followed the articel on https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel:

1. portage.conf
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965"

2. Installed sys-kernel/linux-firmware
3. Configured and build kernel like described in the articel
4. Rebuild my world
Code:
l430 linux # emerge --ask --changed-use --deep @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- cross-avr/avr-libc-1.8.1::salfter (masked by: package.mask)
For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Nothing to merge; quitting.

7. Summary
So you can see a difference between 6.1 (best performance [intel]) and 6.3 (worst performance[modesettings]) at Gnome as WM if you look at the FPS counter.

However, I suffer under the fact that the FPS count with XFCE as WM drops, compared to Gnome. I use XFCE for my games for some reasons.
Can anyone explain that to me? Or give me a hint in which log I have to look to find the issue? That would be awesome!

best regards!

@blackworker :

From what I understand you see 10-20% drop in 3D performance?
That's more what I would expect from what I've read.

It's late, but do your use flags indicate that you built the intel driver without dri3 support?
Installierte Versionen: 2.99.917_p20170216(18:54:54 12.03.2017)(dri sna udev -debug -dri3 -tools -uxa -xvmc)
Can you check in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what version of dri is loaded and running?

I tested intel modesetting for a short time, as I normally dont use my builtin intel chip but have a radeon card. But from what I can remember, I had to activate dri3 first, it did not autoload, before I had got reasonable performance.

Hi netjiro,

here is the part of my Xorg0.log

Code:

[    27.550] (WW) intel(0): Option "PreferredMode" is not used
[    27.550] (--) RandR disabled

In my kernel config, I have build in dri2 and dri3. Is this a mistake from me? Is my (old) hardware even able to use dri3?
What should I change/What can I do now?

Best regards

SNA + DRI3 should work everywhere, the latter usually needs to be manually enabled though. It should show up in the log between the "[DRI2]" and "RandR" lines if it is.

It looks like modesetting isn't the one-size-fits-all driver it's hyped up to be just yet. I'd expect that to get better with time but for now keep using the intel one if it works better.

not quite - on my intel machines, I have to use UXA or else
libreoffice throws weird typing artifacts (the internet knows
about this)

And that means I have to use the intel driver, or is there
a way to use UXA with modesetting?

I remerged my driver with DRI3 flags, and they got loaded too:

But I have the same poor performance as with DRI2. So I think, maybe the xf86-intel-driver is the reason? I try to install a older one, and test again.

Hm, nice thread, gives me so food for thought for my situation. I recently performed big upgrade on my old laptop with intel graphics, and performance went down the drain, especially in firefox. Artifacts (switching tabs redraws just parts of the window unless you manually shift scroll slider back and forth), high CPU utilization.

As you posted that, I've noticed also a poor performance on playing 1080p youtube videos in fullscreen mode. Most of the time sound/video are not synchronized.

If you found any solution for this, please keep me updated :?

dmpogo, blackworker, et al ...

I had the same issue ... my solution was to roll back using the following package.mask:

/etc/portage/package.mask:
>=media-libs/mesa-13.0.5
>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.2
>=x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170216

This will require you to grab the required ebuilds from git (see the above thread for details).

Also, FYI, that update broke a hardened/linux/musl/x86 install ... and no matter if I roll back the intel driver simply won't load (previously it would if I loaded any dependent module via /etc/X11/xorg-conf.d).

Yep, I have a bit newer than you, 965 graphics from 2008, which worked rather perfectly with xorg-x11-1.17 and corresponding mesa/drivers, and then I jumped to 1.19 and mesa-13 :(

Okay I've got some news for you:

khayyam, I tried to follow your suggestion and install the 3 packages in your specific version. Unfortunately, I was not able to install the specific mesa/xf86-video-intel package. I've got some problems during the build, which I couldn't resolve myself.

So, I am gone the other way, upgrading mesa to the newest version (17.1.0) with xorg-server 1.19.2 and video-intel 2.99.917_p20170216.

Now I have better performance at my games. I would even say, I have the same performance as before my nightmare upgrade, but thats just an objective statement from me.

Maybe it help you as well, if you just upgrade mesa to the unstable 17.1.0 version.

Best regards

I actually seems to have solved most of my problems without downgrade, but disabling 'gallium' in xorg-server USE flags. This came with the following caveat. I had two VIDEO_CARDS enabled 'intel' and 'i965' and using i965 xorg-drivers required gallium to be enabled in xorg-server. Remarkably, i965 choice (re)appeared, as I remember, quite recently, I always had just 'intel' before, and it does not generate a new driver in /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers, nor my Xorg.log mentions anything but 'intel'.

Anyway, I disabled 'i965' as well in xorg-drivers + USE='-gallium' in xorg-server-1.19.2 and everything seems fine. I guess old intel cards are not too happy doing 2D via 3D pipeline.

Just a quick followup:
I just did a full system update, ending up with mesa 17.0.6 (current stable)

With the "intel" driver glmark2 now reports ca 3000 +/-150 (up ca 50% from before)
With the "modesetting" driver I get ca 2100 +/-100 (up ca 3-4x from before)

So at least there is good progress :)
But the old "intel" driver is still ca 50% faster than "modesetting", i.e. switching now gives ca 30% drop instead of >50% as before.

Same intel i7-6770HQ, skull canyon nuc
VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965"
media-libs/mesa-17.0.6
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.19
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170313
