Empire Total War Steam Graphics Isssue [SOLVED]

The other very few games I have on steam run just fine and Empire Total War was fine too when I was running Arch about a year ago on the same hardware.

The problem seemed grim. Controls, graphics and lag were a mess. Today I stumbled upon: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7937682.html#7937682
Which has got the game running smoothly and has given me hope. The only issue is the in-game graphics are gray-scale/mostly black and unplayable, the menu/loading screens look just fine.

I'm running an intel haswell 4130 with integrated graphics 4400 HD on ~amd64.

Not sure what other info to provide at the moment.
