X3 tony # hp-setup -i 192.168.0.194

Setting up device: hp:/net/ENVY_4520_series?ip=192.168.0.194

---------------------
| PRINT QUEUE SETUP |
---------------------

Please enter a name for this print queue (m=use model name:'ENVY_4520'*, q=quit) ?
Using queue name: ENVY_4520
Locating PPD file... Please wait.
error: No PPD found for model envy_4520 using old algorithm.
error: Unable to find an appropriate PPD file.

Would you like to specify the path to the correct PPD file to use (y=yes, n=no*, q=quit) ? n
error: PPD file required. Setup cannot continue. Exiting.
X3 tony # locate ppd|grep -i envy|grep 4520
/usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-envy_4520_series-hpijs.ppd.gz
/usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-envy_4520_series.ppd.gz

If I select either file I get the result:
Code:
---------------------
| PRINT QUEUE SETUP |
---------------------

Please enter a name for this print queue (m=use model name:'ENVY_4520'*, q=quit) ?
Using queue name: ENVY_4520
Locating PPD file... Please wait.
error: No PPD found for model envy_4520 using old algorithm.
error: Unable to find an appropriate PPD file.

Would you like to specify the path to the correct PPD file to use (y=yes, n=no*, q=quit) ? y

Please enter the full filesystem path to the PPD file to use (q=quit) :/usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-envy_4520_series-hpijs.ppd.gz
Description for the file: HP Envy 4520 Series hpijs, 3.16.3

Use this file (y=yes*, n=no, q=quit) ? y
Enter a location description for this printer (q=quit) ?downstairs
Enter additonal information or notes for this printer (q=quit) ?none

Adding print queue to CUPS:
Device URI: hp:/net/ENVY_4520_series?ip=192.168.0.194
Queue name: ENVY_4520
PPD file: /usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-envy_4520_series-hpijs.ppd.gz
Location: downstairs
Information: none
error: Printer queue setup failed. Error : successful-ok-ignored-or-substituted-attributes

This worked without a hitch on my other gentoo computer. Same version of hplip (latest stable). I even packaged it with quickpkg and installed on the second computer. No luck.
Oh, also same use flags.

EDIT: When running hp-setup with the debug flag "-g" I get a message " debug: Cache miss: envy_4520_series" Does anybody know what this means and how to fix it?

Rather blundered onto the solution. I copied "/usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat" from the working gentoo computer to the non-working computer. They should have been the same but that got the non-working computer to automatically detect the Envy 4520 and got rid of the deceptive "cache miss" message.

Then following a tip from an on-line discussion, I ran gunzip on /usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-envy_4520_series-hpijs.ppd.gz. I hadn't had to do this step on the first computer.

Also should mention that luckily I still had a Win 7 computer because a windows computer is necessary to attach the printer to the wireless router.
BAD hp, BAD!
