First I'll say that I'm a sound noob. Yesterday I managed to get sound working on my Thinkpad X60, but I want to set up mpd to listen to an http stream through an ssh tunnel. I added the "lame" useflag (for use as an en/decoder in the stream; not sure if this is necessay) and reemerged mpd (which pulled in lame). Now mpd and firefox make no sound, though my terminal bell works fine.
That's the whole story as far as I know. Maybe lame didn't break anything, but it worked when I went to sleep, and after waking and emerging lame, sound doesn't work.
I've checked all channels in alsamixer and have restarted the machine.
Edit: I forgot to say: I removed the lame useflag from mpd, reemerged mpd, depcleaned, and restarted. No effect.

I think you need to determine if sound works with something much simpler than mpd or firefox first, aplay will work for wav files, or mplayer/mpv for most audio formats, or whatever else you may already have installed.
Are you using pulseaudio or not?
lame should only be needed if mpd on your thinkpad will be the source of the streeam, ie only needed for encoding. _________________ "You have to invite me in" |

Well, speaker-test doesn't work. I think that's as simple as it gets?

Nope, just alsa.

Good to know.
Edit: just tried mpv, no output. |

This is a very common trap when first using alsa.
Quote: | Mixer
If you can't hear anything, the output channels may be muted. Unmute the channels with the desktop environment's mixer or with alsamixer by selecting the appropriate channels and pressing the M key to mute or unmute:
user $alsamixer

Like I said, I've checked all of the channels. I've even made sure that they are unmuted using amixer.
What would really help me is a good resource on how to troubleshoot sound issues. All of the documentation I have found has been unusually bad. And most guides are simply a list of fixes for one-off issues.
Edit: I've managed to get audio working on another Thinkpad. I'm not sure how I broke things here, but I don't think it's worth anyone's time. Thanks for the help so far. |

The Thinkpad has ACPI Mute and there was a regression in older kernels. What version are you running? |
