I'm trying to update to kde-apps/*-17.04. Most of it has gone well, but libkexiv2 and khelpcenter are both failing to compile.

libkexiv2 prevents me from updating okular, and khelpcenter, while not a big deal, is holding back a metapackage which could cause some problems down the road. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you switch to GCC-5.4.0 without reading the relevant news item?

Looks like I did. For some reason I thought it was still keyworded, must have missed that it was in a world update.

Ran eselect news list though and I don't see anything pertaining to gcc 5.4. The only gcc related news item I see is from 2015.

EDIT: I looked back a little. This system had gcc 5.4 to begin with I think. I only installed Gentoo on here ~6 months ago. It looks like GCC 5.4 should have already been included.

EDIT (again): Looked at the news item anyway, and revdep is having me rebuild a lot of stuff. I'll edit this one more time with the results.

No, it went stable only a few days ago. Which means stable users got the news at the same time, even though it was written in 2015:

https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2015-10-22-gcc-5-new-c++11-abi.html

*At least* dev-libs/exiv2 and media-gfx/xapian need a rebuild, but most likely you still need to run the command as shown in the news item.

Okay, running that command now has 322 packages being rebuilt. I guess the date shown on that news item just mislead me a little. I though I was already running GCC 5, and I guess I missed that gcc was being updated. It's still running, so I'll update if it fixes it. I ran revdep-rebuild after updating (it's part of my update script) but I guess you needed those specific flags to rebuild packages using libstdc++.so.6

I'll edit this post with the result (I suspect it's a few hours away though lol).

this bit me but I just retreated to gcc-4.9.4

is there any big advantage to moving to gcc-5.4 (like, will
libreoffice build in less than 45 minutes and firefox
open in less than 2 seconds :) )

You can't avoid it in the long term, some packages already require >=5.

Here is the changelog for GCC 5.4.
https://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-5/changes.html
Skimming through it there are some optimization improvements on the compiler itself. While I doubt you'll see 45 minute firefox, it should improve your compile times from what I read. If you do any coding yourself there are some nice changes there as well. It supports some new c++ features, so any new packages (or any updates to packages) that use them won't compile if you don't use GCC 5.4.

EDIT: Still compiling packages (some of them took 4 hours, 4x the normal compile time) but I checked and saw taht libkexiv2 is now on 17.04

EDIT (again): Okay, well it's close to done. The two packages that were giving me problems are both updated now though. Thanks for the help.
