PostPosted: Fri Apr 14, 2017 1:55 pm    Post subject: Can no longer start kde plasma -How to diagnose [SOLVED] Reply with quote

I am experiencing a very strange issue with kde plasma.

I use startx and I am not running systemd.

Here is the content of my .xinitrc

exec ck-launch-session /usr/bin/startkde

When I run startx I briefly see the kde logo and the little circle animation;
very shortly thereafter the screen goes blank and the system enters
into "sleep mode" i.e. there is no longer any video signal going to the monitor,
but the power is still on.

At this point, it is unclear whether the issue is related to a recent
software update or to something else.

The system log contains nothing helpful and sometimes,
there is a block of garbage (a long sequence of "^@").

I am running out of ideas. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

More info:

* My system is relatively new ( about 1 1/2 yrs old) : i7 5280k 64 Gb, Zotac Nvidia GeForce GT 730 (nouveau driver)

* Although a hardware failure is always a possibility, it seems unlikely.
- Windows 10 runs without any apparent issues.
- I can boot the 2016 gentoo live dvd and run kde/plasma from there.
- I can start Xorg with another window manager

* opengl is working. I can run the demo app "glxgears" from a plain x terminal in a non-kde X environment.

* I tried rebuilding all the packages from kde-plasma and kde-frameworks.

Log the output:
Code:
exec /usr/bin/startkde  &> plasma.log

Or start X with a terminal:
Code:
exec xterm

then startkde in it.

Please provide *any* kind of information about the version numbers involved here, your emerge --info, what happened/what you updated before this stopped working for you.

I tried both

exec /usr/bin/startkde &> plasma.log

and startkde from an xterm.

The log is empty. The machine goes to sleep almost immediately when I issue the startkde command.

All packages in kde-plasma kde-frameworks and dev-qt are up to date with the latest versions in portage (unstable).

Here is the output of emerge --info

Additional info:

The problem started after a kernel update. I thought it might have something to do with this, so I booted the old kernel
(which was left untouched) and the problem is the same. I even recompiled all the modules under the old kernel (with the
sources in /usr/src linked to the same kernel version).

What version of libdrm is installed, and did you build kwin against that version?

When it fails, can you use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a text console (which, if successful, should wake the monitor)? Can you change the state of numlock/capslock (either in the sleeping X session or on the console)? Is the machine still alive (but producing no video signal) or is it completely hung? Check that by accessing it over the network.

libdrm-2.4.79

kwin was build with this specific version.

after the machine goes to "sleep", ctr-alt-fn does not work (no access to a console). The keyboard
Num/Cap lock does not work anymore either. I have not checked yet whether the machine responds to a ping.

Also, just in case, I ran the intel cpu diagnostics under windows and got no error.

I doubt this is related, but I just pushed kwin-5.9.4-r1 to fix build with >=libdrm-2.4.78. You may want to sync and update just in case.

I tried a network connection after the video signal goes away. I can access the machine.
I looked at the logs ... nothing really sticks out. Now what ?

I created a blank test user and I succeeded in capturing a log by running /usr/bin/startkde >& plasma.log from an xterm running without a window manager. I do not see anything useful, but another pair of eyes may help. What I conclude from this is that the Xserver dies for some unknown reason and the connection is lost. I also attach the Xorg log file. Nothing there thatattracts my attention. There is an error at the end ("Backtrace" ) ... but no actual backtrace is generated. I am completely stumped.

Just wanted to add a link to my related topic on this (sorry I did not see yours when I posted)

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8057920.html

We apparently have the same GPU and are both using nouveau. I'm also seeing the same non-verbose error in my Xorg log.

Just some notes on what I have tried so far and see:

- It's probably NOT related to a kernel upgrade as I haven't upgraded mine lately and am seeing this.
- Tried downgrading mesa to 17.0.2, no luck.
- 'startx /usr/bin/startfluxbox' works here.
- This problem causes sddm to flicker and the screen to go black for me making the system unusable. Tried downgrading sddm to stable, no luck.

Hopefully we can work together to isolate it and maybe fix it.

- Downgrading xorg-server to 1.19.2 also does NOT resolve it.

I also note you are not using systemd while I am. That means it probably isn't isolated to either of those.

Downgrading to x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.75 fixes it for me. :)

Looks like we found a bug. I wonder if it affects anyone else besides those with GT 730 GPUS?

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.
Upgrading the kernel to 4.10 was the answer for me.

A relevant bug report. The methodology is instructive.

Thanks, I went ahead and commented on the bug report and shared a link to your topic. Hopefully it gets fixed. If they are running into it in Arch also it is likely not a Gentoo packaging issue but upstream.

I'm the OP for bug 3512844. I'm using nouveau with a GK107GLM aka Quadro K1100M on an HP Zbook17. FWIW.

I just want to say that I'd been having all sorts of problems with X recently,* and it seems to have been the current ~amd64 version of libdrm which was responsible.

* - having to try a few times to get an application to start, being able to connect between once and zero times to vnc before needing to restart X, having file dialogs seize up... and I use LXDE via LightDM (although I have kde installed and use some of its applications).

So, thanks :)
