upgraded kernel 4.4 to 4.9 w/nouveau no console fonts no X

hello,

running gentoo 64bit nomultilibs nvidia gtx 970 using nouveau.

I just recently performed a world update and the new kernel 4.9.16 got pulled in. i compiled the kernel/modules w/ Make old config. and updated grub.

w/4.9.16 I have no console fonts and cannot even start sddm / X as I just get a blinking cursor.

I re-emerged xorg-server xorg-drivers to no avail.

I am missing something. anyone else experience this?

Did you doublecheck your nouveau DRM drivers in the kernel (as modules?) are selected? It seems that for ATI things changed, don't know about nvidia, might have also changed and your old config won't work with the new kernel.

Pastebin you dmesg output and your .config .
