There should be an option for that in the poll.

Currently using Mate but I have used pretty much all of them...I liked the DWM reference because I used it for a few months and I liked it but I just can't completely get used to a tiling wm so went back to my favorite DE.

My first desktop environment was KDE2. But as I was new to the linux world it was very fun to install and try all possible WM around. I remember to try at least Window Maker, ICEWM, Fluxbox and some others. Also Gnome at the time. It was kind of cool experience. When KDE3 was released it was very buggy. I did try it for some time but I gave up and switched to Gnome. One of my friends introduce me to Ion. And I really enjoy it. The simplicity, the way to manage windows only by keyboard. So as time passed I have switched to KDE 3 (when it was mature enough), Gnome 2. But I wanted to have back the tiling window experience. So at first I did install xmonad as WM for Gnome. And then I discover Awesome WM. I'm using it for quite long time, I can't tell for how long. I'm unable to switch to anything else.

During my linux career I tried many DEs. I started with KDE 3.x and mandrake 7.2, then I tried a few iterations of gnome2, xfce, fluxbox and KDE4 till 2001, when I bought a macbook pro and put linux on hiatus. Then, few years later, when I got root password of the PCs of out network, I kept going till KDE Plasma 5. Now I live happily with FVWM

Same here for a very long time now. I do most stuff from terminal prompts and have hotkeys configured to launch apps I use a lot. I found that I never missed desktop icons at all. People see my desktop and think something's broken ;).

OpenBox! Never look back. No creature comforts required. For the reasonable minimalist. I bounced back and forth for a number of years between wmaker, E17, fvwm crystal, icewm and xfce before settling on openbox. But, I have to credit fvwm crystal for taking away what at the time seemed an unfriendly task to setup openbox that first time.

I returned to using OpenBox, as well. I used K.D.E. 5 for a while recently because it handled multiple monitors better in some situations. I started using OpenBox years ago on a Pentium III because I wanted a graphical environment that wouldn't tax its 128MB of R.A.M., after trying WindowMaker, FluxBox, and others. WindowMaker was interesting... I wonder whether it is still maintained... wow, I just checked its website, and amazingly, it is still maintained.

This thread got me looking into i3. Haven't tried it yet, but it looks right up my alley for sure. Very cool.

Sawfish, the only wm I could find that had a working, authentic looking Amiga Workbench theme.

My main desktop:
Fluxbox --> KDE3 --> LXDM --> awesome --> i3wm --future?--> sway

Nowdays if I want to have a full DE I'll install XFCE.

One exception is when I installed Fedora for my father - I went with the default GNOME shell. It still amazes me that he doesn't know how to upgrate the system even when the notification gives him the "upgrade" button. :D I still have to keep his system up-to-date.
