|
|
Hi,
i am wondering if anybody else does want to use gnome without installing samba?
since recently samba (in fact only the smbclient library i beliefe) is a dependency of gnome-control-center (git.gnome.org commit). accordingly the new 3.23.91 version of the gnome-control-center ebuild also has a dependency on samba.
is there any chance of building gnome-control-center without samba support, and could this be done solely on a ebuild basis?
thx |

The samba dependency is driven by the USE flag "cups" for gnome-control-center.
I don't gnome, but there must be a way to manage your printer outside of gnome-control-center. |

hi,
up to 3.22.1 it was controled by the cups use flag. but since recently the printer panel is no longer optional in g-c-c (see link to gnome git above). so smbclient/samba is always required. this also reflects in the new (still masked) ebuild 3.23.91 where the cups use flag is no longer used.
i think its a gnome problem not specific to gentoo. |

FWIW, my preference is the opposite of yours. I install samba as a matter of routine, to make Linux/Win machines see each other on the LAN, and eschew gnome, kde, and their variants.
But if I was in your shoes, I'd simply avoid updating g-c-c beyond 3.22
You are right though g-c-c- 3.23 depends on samba, period, and that seems to be the direction the gnomes are taking, bless their hearts. |

lol because bra is not really what i mean, but hey, bras is french for arm
it looks clear it's not optional ; what is strange is that it looks like to have the printer panel you need smbclient.
so for gnome, you cannot use a printer without smbclient? |

maybe their configure environment changed and all will be resolved once the ebuild is stable...
@cboldt: a modular environment is always better imho |

3.23/3.24 is p.masked for a reason. We hope to make it optional again before unmasking, or before stabling (help welcome). Till then, you get what you asked for when unmasking things. _________________ GNOME team lead; GStreamer; MIPS/ARM64 |
