Hello,

I have a Powermac G5 with dual 2.7Ghz PowerPC 64 bit CPUs, 8GB of RAM, and a single 250GB SATA SSD. I am trying to install Gentoo but having trouble with various packages failing to emerge during install. The first package that fails is "dev-libs/libtasn1" which I'm able to "fix" with "perl-cleaner --all." Now I am stuck on "sys-devel/binutils-2.25.1-r1" I am using the "latest" install CD from 2014-07-13 and the "latest" stage3 "stage-3-ppc-20160313.tar.bz2"

Here is some of the output, sorry if this is not enough or the wrong information, I'll post whatever is needed!

Code:

livecd / # cat /etc/portage/make.conf
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example for a more
# detailed example.
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=powerpc -mtune=powerpc -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing.
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
# These are the USE flags that were used in addition to what is provided by the
# profile used for building.
USE="bindist"
PORTDIR="/usr/portage"
DISTDIR="${PORTDIR}/distfiles"
PKGDIR="${PORTDIR}/packages"
MAKEOPTS="-j3"

sys-devel/binutils-2.25.1-r1::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="cxx nls zlib -multislot -multitarget -static-libs -test -vanilla"

I think the build log is too long, so here it is on pastebin:
http://pastebin.com/gmYtjmSx

Any help getting this old machine back up and running is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Code:
/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/binutils-2.25.1-r1/work/binutils-2.25.1/gold/output.cc:355:1: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault
which often means you have hardware issues. Try again with MAKEOPTS set to -j1 though.

Hey John, thanks for the quick reply!

That's interesting, could a hardware issue reliably fail at the exact same point each time? I did swap the RAM, I might try putting the original RAM back in. Either way, I have it compiling binutils with -j1. I will post back with results.

Thanks!

Thanks Neddy, I'm blind, oops!

@John R. Graham I tried emerging binutils with -j1 and it was successful! However now I am stuck on sys-devel/gcc-4.9.4:

FORCED-INDUCTN,

Code:
In file included from tm.h:34:0,
                 from insn-latencytab.c:7:
insn-flags.h:2179:57: error: expected identifier before ')' token
 extern rtx        gen_altivec_vpkuhus             (rtx, rtx, rtx);

That appears to be a source code error.
Remove all of /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc.
Remove anything gcc related in /usr/portage/distfiles
Code:
emerge --sync
to fix the Gentoo repository. The other things will be fetched as they are needed.

Does it fail in the same place now?

A hardware error cannot be ruled out. Your CPU can run hot.
Do you need to clean out the fans and heatsinks?
Maybe the fans have failed?

@FORCED-INDUCTN: I also had some weird issues installing/updating Gentoo on my G5s. I turned out to be that the SSD was the problem. Sometimes it worked, sometimes the data got corrupted and I had segmentation faults during building. As soon as I changed back to a SATA-1 HDD everything went smooth on the same setup. Beware of the Apple Mac SATA-controller, for it only supports SATA-1, not 2 or 3. :roll:

Apart from that going from the 2016 stage3 to current can be a rough ride. Better build the entire toolchain first. I started the upgrading process with
Code:
/usr/portage/scripts/bootstrap.sh
emerge -e system
which turned out to be a good choice. Also check your CFLAGS in make.conf, as gcc does not support -march= for PPC-hardware, you have to use -mcpu=, in your case -mcpu=G5.
