PostPosted: Sat Feb 18, 2017 6:39 pm    Post subject: XDM not starting at default runlevel (Nvidia) Reply with quote

Hi. So I've had this problem for quite some time (on 2 separated system) since xorg-server 1.18 probably.
When xdm is set to the default runlevel, the system loads into the black screen. Restarting xdm helps and lxdm starts as expected.

The funny thing is that in some rare situations the system DO start normally. And since logs looks ok to me, I'm totally out of ideas..
I guest that problem should be quite common, since I got it on two different systems with nvidia. Any help is really appreciated

Code:
ASUS-G75VW roman # cat /etc/conf.d/xdm
# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you haven't accidentally configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | gpe | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.

Code:
ASUS-G75VW roman # grep nvidia /etc/portage/make.conf

Do you use only a nvidia gpu or also the intel gpu?

You should check the option to start the x-server regardless of the input-devices. There was a way to force the x server to boot up without any input devices.

Nvidia only on both systems. One with recent drivers and the second one with 304.* legacy ones.
x-server actually starts (it's listed in the process list), but it's nothing but a black screen

Coud it be some kind of async operation with nvidia module..? Maybe it's not ready yet when x-server requests some operations..? Because everything starts perfectly manually
Also my xorg.conf(default one generated by nvidia util)

openrc resolve dependencies that are at the same runlevel.
it mean that openrc will start "that" before "this" if "that" and "this" are at the same runlevel.

why i'm telling you that you may ask?
because if you have something running not at the same runlevel as xdm (default), it is possible that openrc will resolve dependency the way it just see them.
here's common errors people do
consolekit dbus sshd and net.* (any except net.lo that must remain at boot) must share the default runlevel

check the list i just gave you, and make sure they are at default runlevel too.

I used a year ago such a legacy gpu, 9800m gts.
That needs afaik a kernel hack, bug was a year ago open, was ignored by bgo.
Not sure what changed regarding this gpu and kernels 4.0.x till now.
I would be not surprised when there are more incompatibilities.
You may use the open source drivers for that legacy one, or "recommended" "my opinion" upgrade when it is a desctop box. Less power consumption + online time = less costs as using old gpus with far more power consumption!

Black screen

out of sync => i have it wiht my garbage vga external screen. no response. Its a wrong EDID. out of vsync basically. crap EDID, crap VGA. (in comparison 700 Euro VGA Hp monitor works fine on the same vga line.)

some gpus have issues. It is a known fact

Which gpus are we talking about? notebook gpu? desctop gpu? which type? which nvidia internal name? which board, which model?

which screen are we talking about? laptop? external? which connection?

so what does xorg.log says.

Do you have those lines in any config file in that folder? The file name does not really matter, the content matters

Code:
ASUS-G75VW roman # cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20opengl.conf
Section "Files"
   ModulePath "/usr/lib32/xorg/modules"
   ModulePath "/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia"
   ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
EndSection

contents of this file please which should be in your /home

Code:
-rw-------  1 roman roman    0 Feb 19 13:15 .xsession-errors

Yup. That patch is still needed. Should probably switch it to nouveau, but that's just an old pc at parent's house, so It's really nothing critical.

Desktop GeForce 970. Tried both hdmi and DVI connections and switching off second screen completely. Same result - black screen on boot, working DE after xdm restart. Xorg.log in the first post.

Yup. Got it.

It's empty, but I guess it should be. Theres no autologon with LXDM.

Can you please explain me why you are suing 2944x 1080 on an ordinary bluereay 1080p screen ?

I got a second 1024*600 screen. So it's basically a merged virtual screen I guess (I've tried switching it off and the second system with this kind of error got only 1 screen anyway, so I't shouldnt be a problem. Everything is working after I restart xdm AFTER the boot)

Roman_Gruber:
for your information, it's not his monitor that is set to 2944x1080 but his virtual screen.
and if his virtual screen is set as-is, it's certainly because he use more than just one monitor.

[ 4.816] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): LG Electronics 24MP55 (DFP-0): connected
[ 4.847] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Daewoo HDMI (DFP-1): connected
[ 4.851] (II) NVIDIA(0): "DFP-0:nvidia-auto-select,DFP-1:nvidia-auto-select"

nvidia has certainly set 1920x1080 for that monitor and you can guess how the other one was set then "2944-1920" = 1024, guessing a 1024x768
it's more easier to see when the two share the same resolution or when nvidia-autoselect is not use.
[ 14.327] (II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 3360 x 1050

alsasound is a boot runlevel service, change it to boot and your system will certainly be ok.

switched it to boot. unfortuanly no success. lxdm-greeter-gt still won't launch after the x-server and we're stuck with the black screen :(
I'm totally out of ideas here.. something wrong with my use flags or kernel config maybe..? Having this on 2 separate systems is totally weird.

Sooo.. every few month I'm getting bored and trying to fix this mess again.
Result so far:
1) OpenRC replaced with systemd. No success (and xfce theme changing stopped working without consolekit too..)
2) Nvidia driver replaced with nouveau. No success
3) Nouveau build-in the kernel. No sucess
Maybe anyone got idea what could be the case with the blank screen on DM loading..?
This is crazy, but I'm rebuilding system with wayland support right now.
If this won't help I'll probably rebuild the whole system just with -O2 flag (I got some mixed O2/O3 + graphite now). Got no further ideas except clean install if that won't help..

PS. I've upgrated the second PC (the one with 6600).. well basically the only thing left from it is HDD. Switched driver to Intel (HD 610). Xorg boots just fine. That's strange, considering that nouveau driver isn't working on my main system.

UPDATE: Wayland works good with nouveau and Gnome. GDM starts nicely with nvidia binary drivers and X too.
No idea what the problem with LXDM and other DM's was, don't really care at this point. Gnome 3 classic looks nice (dumbed down a bit, but that's ok. haven't used it since they've dropped fallback), systemd is meh (but usable), but I'm just happy to be able to use Gentoo again.

How are you launching the greeter? Somehow, runlevels appear to be involved, but I have no idea why (unless you're trying to start it in local, which would be odd, and won't work.)

You might be better off switching to sddm; someone else was having problems with lightdm-greeter, and did so.
krinn wrote:

True, but earlier runlevels like sysinit and boot are still available, and it knows what has started then (so they can be considered for dep calc.)
So in that sense, anything in sysinit comes before anything in boot, which comes before anything in later, standard "runlevels" (they're not really runlevels at this point.)
Quote:
why i'm telling you that you may ask?
because if you have something running not at the same runlevel as xdm (default), it is possible that openrc will resolve dependency the way it just see them.

No, it won't: they'll have been started beforehand if they're in boot or sysinit.
You're right that 'before' and 'after' are only considered within the "runlevel".
A 'need' (or 'want' if available) will be pulled into the "runlevel" [1], if it has not already been started in boot or sysinit.
Quote:
here's common errors people do
consolekit dbus sshd and net.* (any except net.lo that must remain at boot) must share the default runlevel
Eh? That may be true in terms of dependencies, I'm not sure (actually I'd expect required dependencies to be pulled-in, though you might need to add some optional ones); but it's got nothing to do with the issue.

Take a look at /etc/init.d/xdm and read the comments to understand properly; in a nutshell xdm makes use of a sysvinit feature, to start itself after the current runlevel (in pid1 terms: it could be default, it could be nonetwork, or anything configured, in openrc) has initialised. Look in /etc/inittab for the other side of the equation.
It's quite clever, really.

So no matter what you do, openrc dependencies (within the 'default' set) do not come into play, since starting up xdm as far as openrc is concerned, simply means to tell init (pid1) to start it once everything else is done, ie once rc has finished. That's why using local wouldn't work (not that I think anyone is doing that.)

--
[1] "set" would be a better word than "runlevel", on the rc side.

One year later I've decided to look into this again.
sddm worked great for quite some time, as it was mentioned before, but the problem returned recently.
Symptoms same as before:
- Nvidia binary drivers
- Most of the times sddm starts into the black screen. Sometimes it starts well tho
- sddm starts nicely after manual xdm restart
- disabling xdm and starting it after the boot manually works nice

Nothing seems wrong with Xorg
