Hello,
I have Xfce4 running on my newly installed Gentoo. My problem is Xfce screen brightness resets after each reboot so I have to set it manually every time. xfce4-power-manager plugin also shows up about a minute late after Xfce starts. What might I be missing here?

Did you follow this guide when you installed xfce4? https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xfce
Please post your output so we know more about your system _________________ Main box- AsRock x370 Gaming K4

Yes I followed the mentioned guide. I had this same issue before reinstalling, in my older system.

I noticed on the xfce guide page it's showing: Quote: | XFCE_PLUGINS="brightness clock trash" |
xfce4-power-manager
Your emerge --info has Quote: | XFCE_PLUGINS="clock power trash" | maybe add brightness and see waht happens. However, seems it's in the xfce4-power-manager. https://searchcode.com/codesearch/view/21868623/# but maybe needs it enabled in XFCE_PLUGINS= to acually work? That's one theory.
Another thought: I only use radeon cards, but perhaps the nvidia nouveau driver is causing problems? I've seen mention of various difficulties with nouveau.
Maybe look at the xorg.log and see it any clue pops up.

I have a pretty bare xfce4 installed on all my systems as a "backup" DE, or to boot to when emerging a full kde/qt system, so I don't have many plugins, etc., or much experience on xfce4 problems.
I did find some more info here https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=9091
and more here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=193098
From what I'm seeing while searching- this is a more or less common xfce problem.
More general overview from Arch forum: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Backlight#Overview
What's the output of Code: | qlist -Ic xfce-base/* |
and Code: | qlist -Ic xfce-extra |
BTW, what model desktop or laptop are you using? Laptops especially have various quirks to consider. _________________ Main box- AsRock x370 Gaming K4

I tried adding brightness to make.conf but it didn't work, checked those links but seems my issue is a different. I switched to nvidia but that led me into other problems so I am back with nouveau now .
I noticed my '.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml' file's "brightness-switch-restore-on-exit" value is '0'. I tried changing it to '1' manually and with 'xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p "/xfce4-power-manager/brightness-switch-restore-on-exit" -s 1' but after reboot it changes back to default '0', not really sure if this has anything to do with my issue but tried it anyway .
Code: | [~] cat .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<channel name="xfce4-power-manager" version="1.0">
<property name="xfce4-power-manager" type="empty">
<property name="brightness-switch-restore-on-exit" type="int" value="0"/>
<property name="brightness-switch" type="int" value="0"/>
<property name="handle-brightness-keys" type="bool" value="true"/>
<property name="show-tray-icon" type="bool" value="true"/>
<property name="general-notification" type="bool" value="true"/>
<property name="dpms-enabled" type="bool" value="false"/>
<property name="power-button-action" type="uint" value="3"/>
</property>
</channel> |
and my qlist -Ic xfce-base/ and qlist -Ic xfce-extra. I have added 'xbacklight -set 5' to my .xinitrc as a temporary measure but it would be really nice to resolve this issue.
