Hello.

My system:

- Model: MSI GE62-2SQ Apache Pro
- CPU: Intel Core i7 5700HQ @ 2.7GHz
- iGPU: Intel HD Graphics 5600
- dGPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX960M 2GB
- LPC controller: HM87
- Chipset: Intel 8 Series/C220 Series

I'm trying to make Gentoo work here: Im unable to make it stable and configure Nvidia Optimus.
* 1st modified xorg.conf: https://paste.pound-python.org/show/ZiMKNWhKWoDl1IjGgg8A/
* xorg.conf modified by nvidia-xconfig: https://paste.pound-python.org/show/oT20OoFjUqJbkZ87UlkF/
* xorg.conf from another MSI laptop causes a recoverable black screen (I got it here: https://paste.pound-python.org/show/GJN0t94wPlKbE3YGdpa2/
* xorg.conf that causes partial screen freeze, recoverable: https://paste.pound-python.org/show/cHsUb3RPlIxAyJR03zuT/
- Im unable to extract EDID with get-edid from edid-read tools.
* I got it under Windows with Extron EDID Manager: http://www61.zippyshare.com/v/ddI8GuCH/file.html

Kind regards.

PS: Posted on MSI Forums and Nvidia Linux forums too.

Code:

Here's the Xorg.0.log with latest xorg.conf, it looked the most promising one. The one with black screen maybe has good stuff, no idea.

https://paste.pound-python.org/show/STOxEGgrSGkm6jaOuSpK/

If you consider the others to be interesting to see, please request them and I'll do the tests again. I did them but reported on IRC and forgot to save the URLs.

I followed the Gentoo wiki section about Optimus without success, then started to experiment with xorg.conf to have some hopes :/

I don't have the same model of laptop as you, but my Clevo W230SS laptop also uses NVIDIA Optimus hardware so perhaps the blog posts listed below may be of some help to you (apologies for not posting the contents here, but it's quite a lot of text).

Intel HD 4600 IGP:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB GPU:
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M] (rev a2)

Switching between Intel and NVIDIA graphics processors on a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus hardware running Gentoo Linux

Getting KDE Plasma 5 to work with the NVIDIA closed-source driver in Gentoo Linux

Text too small in X Windows when using nvidia-drivers

Fixing all-white log-in screen when using the LightDM KDE greeter with Plasma 5 in Gentoo Linux

By the way, I was unable to get the SDDM display manager to work on the Clevo laptop and had to resort to LightDM, although SDDM works fine on my Compal NBLB2 laptop with an AMD GPU. I don't know if that has anything to do with the Optimus hardware.

Is there a reason not to use bumblebee?

I got it working eventually, thanks largely to yamakuzure's input in the following thread:
Code:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1037832.html?sid=0651d1563be209c9a48513182edaa7a8

I have a backed up xorg.conf where I was able to get everything running on the nvidia (although it ran very hot, hence bumblebee) which I could post:

Code:
i5-6300HQ CPU @ 2.30GHz + GeForce GTX 950M

I have a TOTAL MESS of xorg.conf files in /etc/X11, I'm in OCD mode trying everything. I should relax and think about this better, but I have nothing more to do really.

I tried the xorg.conf in the first blog post, the result is as promising as other I tried:

https://paste.pound-python.org/show/4dEiH2SstgUNAxxmlvnb/

The interesting part is this:
Code:

[  6517.086] (II) systemd-logind: got pause for 13:65

Forget about "systemd-logind disappeared (stopped/restarted?)". I killed it on purpose to test some stupid idea of myself ;)

Same question: why not bumblebee

Nothing wrong with your xorg.log. Seems wrong specified display or something else. => wiki notes something about specifiying screen with EDID values
