I have installed gentoo numerous times, but this is my first time installing it on a Sparc...

I expected various hardware hassles, etc. since I'm not that familiar with Sparc hardware, but I seem to have been tripped up by a total newbie problem...

Here it is:
I can't login as root after booting from the CD.

here's what I see:
Code:
(lots of dmesg output)

gentoo_sparc login: root
Passwd:

I tried the gentoo-standard [Enter] as I assumed that the root passwwd would be blank, but I recieved the message "Login Incorrect".

I've also tried guessing some obvious passwords, but this is rapidly getting old. What am I missing? Did someone go and change the CD install root passwd when I wasn't looking? The install docs indicate that the password should be blank...has this changed?

There is no root password set on the LiveCD's.

BTW, rc5 is the newest and current version.

I am using gentoo_sparc_1.4rc5...and whether or not there is a root passwd set, the system seems to expect one.

I will try again...rebooting a few times, and see what happens.

Thanks for the response!

Do you use serial console or keyboard?

If keyboard, did you try to use another one?

I cant reproduce this with the 1.4rc5 LiveCD...

I am using a keyboard...and I only have one so I can't try another...it seems to work fine in Solaris or SunOS or whatever is installed on the thing already (think it's Solaris 2.1? does that sound right?)

I don't have a hardware serial terminal available, could I use a software terminal emulator from another PC over a serial cable? As I said I am somewhat new to Sparc hardware.

This is an old Sparcstation 20, so I expected some problems, but not this early into the process!

...hmmm...

wait a minute...I may be able to get hold of another keyboard...I will let you know if I manage to get hold of one.

Any other ideas?

Way off the wall, but I have had to do this once or twice.

Try Ctrl-M for the password.

Maybe I should clarify a little bit what I meant. First, I should have said
Code:

login: root[Ctrl-m]
Passwd: [Ctrl-m]

in case your Return key has problems.

I have needed this for a keyboard with a bad Return key and in one strange
case with a serial terminal early in the initial (GenToo sparc) install.

still gives "Login incorrect"

now I'm really confused... :(

Have you tried booting from CD and reseting the password?

Just boot from cd, mount your filesystems, then chroot into your install and run passwd. Just remember to unmount all your filesystems before rebooting.

Read his post again, he cant login to the CD, not his real system (as he didnt install one yet).

Does anyone see how this can be anything but the keyboard, or the
kernel is misidentifying the keyboard? Some comments that might trigger
an idea from someone.

  • I seem to recall that at one point, the documentation suggested
    something like
    Code:

    boot:  gentoo serial

with a serial console. As I recall, this did not make things easier for me
when I was bringing up a system with a serial device, but it made things different.
    (I was bringing up a U60 with a wyse-50 terminal about a year and a half
    ago.)
  • I can think of four or five ways to get something that looks like en enter, and
it's worth trying all of them:

    • Enter
    • CR
    • Ctrl-M
    • Ctrl-J
    • Ctrl-L (maybe?)

After all, when you are logging in, the login wants to see only "root" and
"" with no invisible control information. And I don't see how to get this
login failure without some sort of invisible control sequence after the
    "t" and the empty password.
  • So, if your terminal is at all soft, can you change what sequence it
sends on an Enter key? (For example, the wyse I was using gives a
choice of CR, LF, CRLF if I recall correctly)

I know this is grasping at straws, but at least these are all easy things
to try. :?

It pretty much *has* to be the keyboard's fault... Is it something other than a type[456] us or gb?

I'm using a Sun Type 5c keyboard..if it has any soft options, I don't know about them.

despite the fact that I'm not using a serial terminal, I tried booting into "gentoo serial", which completely failed. The boot process hung at:
Code:

* Starting local...

I've tried the following during the login process:
ENTER ("Login Incorrect")
Ctrl-M ("Login Incorrect")
Ctrl-J ("Login Incorrect")
Ctrl-L (just a line feed...cursor moved down, but not to beginning of next line)

I've also tried:
Ctrl-enter
Alt-Enter
Shift-Enter
and several other key combinations (which I can't recall just now...) all with the same results..."Login Incorrect"

anyone have any other ideas?

I confused myself: I missed the fact that you are not using a serial
console.

Is this a fair summary?

  • To start, could you please say again what your monitor is? I don't know
why it would matter, but we might as well get a complete configuration
here. Your keyboard is Sun type 5C.

  • And, is it correct that this system is running (does run) Solaris without
any problems (where, with a type 5C you are using RETURN, not ENTER).

  • And, with GenToo CD, neither RETURN nor ENTER works. Nor any other
    enter-like sequence.

Now, for reference, according to a Solaris SS20+Type5C keyboard I just
checked this on, CTRL-M, CTRL-J, and RETURN all work equally well (for
Solaris), but ENTER sends a sequence like <ESC[250z> (and on Solaris is
not useful except in X). And experience teaches us that if you have a
keyboard with a broken Return key, OBP and Solaris take CTRL-M as a
fallback (but not Enter).

So, for definiteness, let's forget the ENTER key for now, and just use
RETURN (which works fine with GenToo on SS20+Type5c)

I am in the process of downloading and building a 1.4_rc5 liveCD for
sparc and will try it on an SS20, but that will take a while (for the
download to complete).

(For an experiment, you might try the same thing. But I'll continue here
when I actually have results. For completeness, the system I am trying
this on is a 256MB SS20 uniprocessor, CPU=TI,TMS390Z55, type-5c kbd,
Sun monitor CPD-1790.)

OK, the results, system as just described,
Code:

wget http://adelie.polymtl.ca/releases/sparc/1.4_rc5/livecd/sparc/gentoo-sparc-1.4_rc5.iso.bz2

Then, 'boot cdrom' ... 'boot: gentoo'

At login prompt,
CR, ENTER, and CTRL-M all work fine for "root,[NULL PW]". CTRL-J works,
but you won't like it. CTRL-L is silently ignored.

At boot, fairly early on the dmesg scroll should look like this:
======
....
Sun Mouse ....
tty00 ...
tty01 ...
tty02 ...
tty03 ...
Sun TYPE 5 keyboard detected without keyclick
....
=======

If building a fresh liveCD doesn't cure it, I don't see how it can be anything but the keyboard. The presence or absence of the 'TYPE 5' line will give a
clue, and beyond that we can look at how your system differs from mine.

But all I did was build a liveCD and reboot a running SS20-Solaris
(Type 5c kbd) system from it. Based on your experience, I wasn't sure
what to expect, but there were no surprises (in fact, there were no
decisions).

Please keep us all informed.

OK, my machine is:
SPARCStation 20 (64 MB RAM, 50MHz processor)
monitor: GDM-17E10
kbd: Sun Type 5c
mouse: optical, lives on a special silver pad

I realize this machine may be a bit underpowered, but I wanted to get it running Linux before I invested in any upgrade parts....

as far as I can tell, the keyboard is being detected properly
dmesg output scrolls by quickly and I have so far been unsuccessful in getting the output to pause (don't know if there IS a way, but I've tried the obvious Scroll Lock, etc.)
...and since I can't even get logged in, I can't just type "dmesg > somefile" :(

however, by booting repeatedly, I can tell that there IS a line starting "SUN Type 5 keyboard...", but that's about all I can tell

the keyboard appears to function 100% correctly in Solaris (SunOS 5.6), which is the OS currently on the HDD

as I said above, I've tried ENTER, RETURN, Ctrl-M, and Ctrl-J with identical results...the EXACT same visible results as if I had entered a bad pasword

Code:

login: root
passwd: [NULLPWD]
Login Incorrect

Ctrl-L just jumps down a line, but does not appear to end the current line, or reset the cursor to the beginning of the next line...like so:
Code:

Login: root[Ctrl-L]
           |<-- cursor is here...no passwd prompt...

I've seen several people reccomend "CR" which I assume stands for Carriage Return...what key combination would I use to send this?
What characters exactly does the RETURN key send? I have been assuming it sent a CR.
Are these the same? Or does the RETURN key send something different?

As I've said I am a newbie when it comes to SPARCs so if these are obvious questions, I do apologize... :)

If you guys need more info on my hardware, please let me know where to find it...

I may try making a new LiveCD, but my downloaded ISO file DID pass the MD5 verification test...so it should be good, yes? The CD I am currently using was burned at the lowest possible speed my software will allow, and seems to be perfectly readable, so I really don't think that's the problem, but you never know...

[NOTE: I am afraid I was a little fast and loose with my ENTER vs. RETURN terminology above...I meant RETURN every time...however, at this point I have tried every combination listed above with BOTH, and I will try to be more precise in future.]

Stop-a should drop you back to the 'ok' boot prompt and leave the contents
of the monitor screen otherwise intact. If it doesn't, unplugging the
keyboard will. You just have to be quick.

OK, your keyboard (Type 5c) and my keyboard (Type 5c) are acting
differently somehow.

For me, ^L (Ctrl-L) did nothing whatsoever.
But ^J moved the cursor like your ^L, but it also did the return function.

And, when the SILO boot: prompt comes up, I gather that the
gentoo
response works.

So, easiest is to put another keyboard on this thing. I don't know off hand
if there is an OpenBoot command to probe the keyboard or to set it.

Or, if you have a model for another country and need to specify that
at boot time? Someone else jump in here, please.

In any case, to summarize: All I did was grab the liveCD from a GenToo
mirror, halt a running Solaris SS20, put a working Type 5C keyboard on it, and
boot the GenToo CD. (This system is the one which usually has the
broken-return-key keyboard on it.)

We can be pretty sure that your keyboard is not sending the same sequences
as mine for the return action (or that it is, but for some reason the kernel
thinks it is some other keyboard.) E.g., I do not see how Ctrl-M can send
anything but 015 (since that's what a CTRL-M is), and how that can be
translated into anything but a RETURN, but somehow for you it seems to
be doing just that.

We have to hope that someone who knows about keyboard models will
read this.

The only reason I suggested rebuilding the bootCD was to make sure we
were all using the same version. It has been known to happen that some
release candidates are less robust that others.

I had this "password" problem this week while booting the 2004.0 Universal Sparc64 LiveCD on an Ultra 5 (using a serial line to Gentoo running on another box).

How I "solved" the problem.
1. I gave up temporarily on using a serial cable, just a normal console monitor and keyboard.
2. Reset the OBP to its default settings.

Then I rebooted, and everything worked, no password needed (whew!).

I speculate that because of the combination of coming in on the serial line and having some non-default settings in OBP, Gentoo thought I was not on the main console port, hence request for password. So my advice is to reset OBP to all defaults and try again. (Learned my lesson: reset to defaults whenever getting anything used.)

Well, that sounds like a good suggestion....

Now can anyone tell me how to reset the OBP to defaults?
As I said I haven't much of a clue when it comes to SPARC hardware...I'm just now learning it.

Thanks!

May depend on your hardware... see for example:

http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/General/OBP.html

In an Ultra 5, hold STOP-N and then power on, holding it until the banner comes up. You'll see a message above the banner saying that it was reset to defaults.
