I'm trying to install inside a virtual machine, no error encountered until now.

yes, they are installed, I tried to re-emerge them and run genkernel but I got the same error |

Not properly solved, but worked around by editing the config of genkernel
I added to /etc/genkernel.conf:

I had the problem that my xz(the compression program) froze up on my 512mb pentium box. I first tried your method but got an error, I fixed it by switching the compression from "best" to "fastest". It can be selected right below the compression or no compression options.
