Are app-arch/xz-utils installed?

Not properly solved, but worked around by editing the config of genkernel

I added to /etc/genkernel.conf:
Code:
COMPRESS_INITRD="no"

I had the problem that my xz(the compression program) froze up on my 512mb pentium box. I first tried your method but got an error, I fixed it by switching the compression from "best" to "fastest". It can be selected right below the compression or no compression options.

Cheers.
