a lot of why when it pulls in nvidia-settings and want to downgrade nvidia-drivers, is more of the issue that the nvidia-settings is an old ebuild and hasn't been updated. You are better off removing the nvidia-settings, and enable the tools USE flag. The newer ebuilds (I checked 361.28 and newer) and they pull in the same files and it lock step with the driver version...

As for nvidia-settings, can you try

emerge --deselect nvidia-settings

and then set

USE=tools

in make.conf?

Well, im back at it again!

The deselect results in "No matching atoms found in "world" favorites file...

Is this any clue?

Boo. Bad ebuild. Finally portage reports the real problem.

Workaround: USE=-video_cards_nvidia for specifically sci-libs/vtk, hack the ebuild, or submit a bug report to change the ebuild to stop explicitly requiring nvidia-settings. I've never used vtk, so don't know if it explicitly needs the old package or it can use the new versions...

Thanks for your help, i did your first workaround, and then we are back to the mysterious:
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers:0

(x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-361.28:0/361::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
(no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

(x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-340.93-r1:0/340::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
~x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-340.93 required by (media-video/nvidia-settings-340.58:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

i've the same problem

You have a new Xorg server installed (good), but now want to install nVidia drivers that cannot work with the new Xorg server. You failed to emerge --unmerge =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-340.93-r1:0/340::gentoo because those drivers are not currently installed. Something in your configuration causes Portage to want to install them. When you need help with a blocker like this, you should post the emerge command that produced the output and post the output of emerge --info.

Also, you should read your news items. News items are often important.

i found one solution here
the problem is nvidia-settings and newer nvidia-drivers

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1035692-start-0.html
in package.use
Code:
#needet for vrt nvidia-settings nvidia driver
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers  tools static-libs

ebuild change vtk-6.1.0-r1.ebuild
line 102
from
Code:
video_cards_nvidia? ( media-video/nvidia-settings )

in
Code:
video_cards_nvidia? ( || ( media-video/nvidia-settings x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers[tools,static-libs] ) )

Thanks everyone for your help.

The problem is now gone.

I got tired of chasing this problem, so i put this off for several months :twisted: and when i did a world update yesterday, everything installed fine, including the latest nvidia-driver together with nvidia-settings.
So i guess there were somekind of bug in there?
