PostPosted: Sun Nov 27, 2016 12:46 pm    Post subject: [Solved] KDE5 Upgrade: blank screen Reply with quote

Hi all. I have an older white box AMD powered machine with Radeon graphics card, on which I finally got around to upgrading to KDE 5. It hasn't gone well.

I went through the procedure in https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE/Plasma_5_upgrade, including updating USE flags, emerging world, cleaning with --depclean etc. I've unmarked all of QT and KDE, then re-emerged it clean. I always end up in a situation where when I start X, I get the KDE splash screen, the KDE logo flies in from the right, the progress bar gets to about 80%, then stalls. After about 10-20 seconds, I get a blank screen with a mouse pointer, then nothing.

I'm stumped. I've looked in various logs, including /var/log/messages and Xorg.0.log, and nothing is jumping out at me.

Here's my emerge --info:
Code:

[Correction thanks to asturm applied]

Hi, therealjrd --
I had said I'd start by recommending you double check the steps in the upgrade process, and after ensuring that is all straight, I'd also recommend running through the troubleshooting checklist in this reference, which contains a number fixes for common problems with sddm: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE/Plasma_5_upgrade#Display_manager. Since then, I've seen you are on a plasma profile, but not using a display manager.

Have you verified that your basic X install works? Gentoo's guide (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide) says:
Quote:
Code:
user $startx

If no window manager has been installed a solid black screen will appear. Since this can also be a sign that something is wrong, the x11-wm/twm and x11-terms/xterm packages can be installed only to test X... Once the programs are installed, run startx again. A few xterm windows should appear, making it easy to verify the X server is working correctly. Once satisfied with the results, unmerge x11-wm/twm and x11-terms/xterm ...

cheers, and good luck

Thanks.

I should have been a bit clearer: I originally followed the upgrade guide to the letter (I thought :-( ) and had the problem, so I've been trying different combinations of use flags in an attempt to at least tease out what's happening. I originally tried plasma-meta, then backed off to plasma-desktop, then went back to plasma-meta. In the process I found some packages which wanted qt4 and qt3support, so I tried turning them back on and re-emerging things, no joy.

I could have sworn I turned off use flag kde, will re-check that one.

The other thing I should have said was that I don't run with a display manager, I generally just boot the box and later say "startx". I wonder if that's part of the problem? Time for more experiments.

Well that's just not correct, of course kde, qt3support, qt4 and qt5 will be in emerge --info when you use the plasma profile. The upgrade guide is talking about removing any _definitions_ (be them positive or negative) from your own make.conf, to let that be handled by the plasma profile.

Ah. Ok, that makes more sense.

I just went and checked, and I *had* removed the offending definitions from my make.conf. And yes, I'm using the plasma profile.

Continuing the digging . . .

If you have a blank screen, then no combination of use flags or proper (plasma-meta) or minimalist (plasma-desktop) selection of Plasma-5 is going to change anything about it. If you use startx, then make sure that your .xinitrc is launching a proper consolekit and dbus session for your user.

Also, try deleting your ~/.cache directory...

My .xinitrc just does

Code:

dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session "/usr/bin/startkde"

I got that from the upgrade guide.

I've also tried
Code:

ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session "/usr/bin/startkde"

and deleted ~/.cache, no effect.

Hi again, therealjrd,
- I edited my previous post [with correction thanks to asturm], and also ask if you've verified the basic X install (i.e. quick check to get xterm and twm going to verify X -- see above).

Cheers

A bit more info, though not yet clarity, I don't think:

I did try twm, and it starts, after a fashion. I still get a blank screen, but I can for instance right-click to get a menu which will allow me to create an xterm. So some stuff is working.

I tried to collect more debug info by strace -f 'ing the startup process. That doesn't do what I want w/r/t collecting a log, but while doing all that, I discovered that there's output going to ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log. In that file, I found entrails saying

Code:

Fatal server error:
[ 60482.843] (EE) parse_vt_settings: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (Permission denied)

I tried adjusting the permission of /dev/tty0 to see what would happen, then I got

Code:

Fatal server error:
[ 60806.449] (EE) xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 7 (Permission denied)

Googling a bit, I found https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38633 which sounds like it's close to what I'm seeing. Except that the solution there was to reinstall xorg-server, to ensure that it could suid correctly. Mine has suid set. But I still suspect that there's some sort of permission issue down in the guts of all the infrastructure.

Time to go work for a living, will spend some more effort on it this evening.

Just a couple thoughts
- you said you are using startx... I know you also said you had set up .xinitrc to startkde? (did you change that for this test?)
- during your original setup for KDE4, did you set XSESSION?

Again, from the "Using startx" part of https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide: "If a file named .xinitrc exists in the home directory, [startx] will execute the commands listed there. Otherwise, it will read the value of the XSESSION variable from the /etc/env.d/90xsession file and execute the relevant session accordingly"

cheers

Hmmm.

My .xinitrc has never set XSESSION, and doesn't now.

. . . but I don't seem to have /etc/env.d/90xsession. I wonder if somehow I haven't emerged all the right packages. Any idea what package provides that file?

Can you try with a new user?
If splash begin, this can be a problem with a config file
If this don't work post your entire xorg.0.log and dmesg

Setting XSESSION is just one way to instruct xinit what to do. Again from https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide --
Quote:
"Values for XSESSION are available in /etc/X11/Sessions/. To set a system wide default session run:
Code:
root #echo XSESSION="Xfce4" > /etc/env.d/90xsession
This will create the 90xsession file and set the default X session to Xfce. Remember to run env-update after making changes to 90xsession."

So I was just asking if you'd done something like that previously, with your KDE4 setup. If not, no worries - you do not "need" that file. I think startx shouldn't even look for that variable unless there is no .xinitrc in the home directory. The other part of my question was whether you maybe still have your .xinitrc doing a dbus-launch and startkde -- thinking that might explain why the twm/xterm test doesn't just come up clean with the normal three xterm windows open...

Took some more time to experiment. Created a new user, empty homedir, copied in my .xinitrc. Sure enough, as that user, KDE starts.

So now to debug what leftover cruft in my regular homedir is causing the problem.

I already tried deleting ~/.cache.

I dug around a bit in the various dot dirs but didn't find anything which jumped out at me.

Here's my latest Xorg.0.log. Anybody see anything suspicious?

D'oh! How obvious!

. . . [later] except that's not it :(

Some trial and error debugging revealed that the problem, apparently all along, was ~/.config/kwinrc.lock. An empty file, with permissions 000, dated Sept 8 1975. Removing that allowed my desktop to start up as it should.

Adjusting thread title. Thanks all for your help and suggestions.
