Dear Gentoo users,

I installed alsamixer and alsamixer gui on my kaveri box (kernel 4.8.9).

I also installed alsa utils.

I ran the aplay command at a terminal:

Code:
rhinoceros etc # aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: Generic Analog [Generic Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 1: Generic Digital [Generic Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

plus another couple of commands that could be helpful here:

Code:
rhinoceros etc # cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [HDMI           ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfeb64000 irq 28
 1 [Generic        ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic

Code:
rhinoceros etc # cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm3p/info
card: 0
device: 3
subdevice: 0
stream: PLAYBACK
id: HDMI 0
name: HDMI 0
subname: subdevice #0
class: 0
subclass: 0
subdevices_count: 1
subdevices_avail: 1
 HD-Audio Generic at 0xfeb60000 irq 16

The sound in e.g. youtube is dead at present.

In the alsa gui when you click on the padlock icon to unlock it then the two volume channel slots have no movable faders in them.

I might need to tweak the kernel a bit to fix this.

Comments appreciated on this problem.

Regards

First off, which sound card is your speaker attached to? My Kavari system has two, like yours. However I have nothing hooked to hdmi, so whenever that shows up as the default, I get no sound without intervention. There appears to be a race between generic and hdmi, because sometimes one is default and sometimes the other.

I have added to /etc/profile.env:
export ALSA_CARD='Generic'

which solves the problem for this machine.

Many thanks for your response.

The kaveri box I use also has debian running on it as well as gentoo.

The sound works OK in the debian install.

The gentoo one is dependent on my own skill in correctly configuring things and setting them up properly.

Using the debian installation I originally got an audio signal through the AOC monitor I use which is connected to the PC via an HMDI cable.

I then got a Logitech speaker set with the (generic I assume) stereo mini jack connector.

I plugged it into a speaker output on the back of the PC and the monitor speaker was silenced and the Logitech speakers functioned normally and gave a good audio sound.

I have run the same set of commands using the debian installation as I did with gentoo for comparison.

Code:
root@rhinoceros:/home/mikef# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic_1 [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic_1 [HD-Audio Generic], device 1: ALC887-VD Digital [ALC887-VD Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Code:
root@rhinoceros:/home/mikef# cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Generic        ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xfeb64000 irq 90
 1 [Generic_1      ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xfeb60000 irq 16

Code:
root@rhinoceros:/home/mikef# cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm3p/info
card: 0
device: 3
subdevice: 0
stream: PLAYBACK
id: HDMI 0
name: HDMI 0
subname: subdevice #0
class: 0
subclass: 0
subdevices_count: 1
subdevices_avail: 1
root@rhinoceros:/home/mikef#

I checked the profile.env file in gentoo and it does not have the ALSA entry you helpfully specified in it.

Based on your comments I am going to try a couple of things in the gentoo installation:

1. I will unplug the Logitech speakers to see if I get any sound from the monitor speaker.

2. If not I will try adding the ALSA entry to the profile.env file and updating configurations etcm plug the Logitech speakers back in and see of I get an audio signal and sound.

Regards and thanks
