So I'm switching from amd64 to ~amd64... running emerge -auDN @world, when I get to emerging libmbim it fails very early.

You can post all build.log with wgetpaste?

I am running into this same compile errors, did you find a solution?

EDIT: figured it out

A generated python script was failing. Had to upgrade the system to use python3 by default, https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2015-07-25-python-targets.html. Then world upgrade seemed to work, though I had to get through some other upgrade issues first (such as switching from ruby20 to ruby21).

@aahamlin: What generated python script was failing? Did you do any manual builds of anything before trying the world build? I am having a very similar issue as OP (build output is not QUITE the same though), and can't get past this.
