Since a while my Thinkpad T440s shows some weird graphical block artifacts after some uptime. I made a video of them. My T440s has a Intel® HD Graphics 4400 onboard graphics.
A reboot fixes the problem, but only temporary. I use Plasma5.75 and xorg-server-1.18.4 The interesting thing: The problem seems to vanish when recording the screen using ffmpeg, but comes back right after stopping the recording.
Does anybody know what may cause these annoying artifacts? Is it a software (xorg) or a hardware issue (like broken nvram)?

@Ant P.: I can't really check that as xf86-video-modesetting is blocked by recent Xorg versions.
@Zucca: As I wrote, as soon as I start the screen capture the artifacts disappear. And they also don't appear on the captured video. |

I have read recently that some intel cpus are affected and are a no fix from intel / kernel.org regarding those gpu artifacts. Mostly happens with celeron / pentium type cpus where the intel gpu is in use
Afaik kernel 3.14 works flawless, anything above causes artifacts.
The issue is clearly with intel cpus with integrated gpus and some powerstates, when you disable c6 / c7 afaik powerstates in bios / software issue may not occur.
I checked intel spec sheets and i saw manufacturing date ~2013 It's a starting point when you want to investigate ...

You may try disabling those powerstates and check if anything changes...
You may try kernel 3.14 or earlier

The modesetting driver is already installed in newer Xorg. You only have to change Driver "intel" to Driver "modesetting". |

You mean in the xorg.conf? I currently even don't have one. |

Enabling DRI3 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/* seems to fix the problem:
