I recently tried nixos for about 7 months after using gentoo for a year and I just wanted to post a few comments about it on here.
I really like the idea of a declarative os and having something like a git repository for os configurations. It has a decent language for configuration that makes it easy to customize the system.
What I don't like is trying to actually use it as a desktop system. I'm sure it works really well for servers especially in the cloud but doing simple things for desktop user is not so easy. Things like setting up dropbox, backups, java, groovy, gradle, and other developer tools did not really work well for me. I think this is mostly a result of not having a bigger community of users and developers.
So for me I'm going to switch back to gentoo and may try nix as a package manager for a few things. |

Does the nix package manager have similarities with docker? _________________ ..: Zucca :..

I'm not sure if it is the package manager but nixos can create containers and vms very easily. |
