For example, my shutdown button, or the logoff option (it takes about a minute to respond), and so does my screen brightness slider (on which my screen is always at max and it's tiresome for my eyes).
I have searched for tutorials and such in youtube or using google, but none seem to work for me.
Is there a package I need to download or something?

emerge --info please.

How did you install gnome? Meta-package?
How do you start your session?

Any errors in the journal?

I installed gnome using the command "emerge gnome-base/gnome telepathy-gabble openssl".
And as for metapackages, I don't know really :? I managed to get it working by miracle :s
I start my session by logging in through command line, log to either my user or to the root, and use the command "startx"
Regarding the journal errors... I don't really know what that is, as I'm pretty new to this whole OS, but I noticed when I boot gentoo I get some error messages, but have never got to read them since it prompts me to the log in screen really quick. Perhaps those are it?

How do you config your video card?

Can you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, lspci | grep VGA, and look in journalctl

I think for the video card I used a flag named VIDEO_CARD="nouveau". I read somewhere that's what you use if you have an Nvidia card.
Also, I generated my kernel by simply using the genkernel command.

And here is the whole Xorg.0.log:

Can you post your full lspci.
I suspect you have Optimus but I don't know how to configure it.
Someone will help you and say if your config is OK.

@zenqs: I suspect you are not running systemd, but GNOME requires it. Did you add init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd to the kernel parameters?

I do remember having to choose something from an elist.

Gentoo ~ # eselect profile list
    Available profile symlink targets:
    [1] default/linux/amd64/13.0
    [2] default/linux/amd64/13.0/selinux
    [3] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop
    [4] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/gnome
    [5] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/gnome/systemd *
    [6] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde
    [7] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde/systemd
    [8] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma
    [9] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma/systemd
    [10] default/linux/amd64/13.0/developer
    [11] default/linux/amd64/13.0/no-multilib
    [12] default/linux/amd64/13.0/systemd
    [13] default/linux/amd64/13.0/x32
    [14] hardened/linux/amd64
    [15] hardened/linux/amd64/selinux
    [16] hardened/linux/amd64/no-multilib
    [17] hardened/linux/amd64/no-multilib/selinux
    [18] hardened/linux/amd64/x32
    [19] hardened/linux/musl/amd64
    [20] hardened/linux/musl/amd64/x32
    [21] default/linux/uclibc/amd64
    [22] hardened/linux/uclibc/amd64

And afterwards I do not think I configured anything in the kernel regarding this. How do I do that? I dived a bit on the kernel configuration menu by doing
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

But I didn't seem to find anything like what you mentioned.

In order to enable systemd in the kernel you should go to "Gentoo Linux" > "Support for init systems, system and service managers" and enable "systemd". But that's not what I meant before. You also have to add init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX variable in /etc/default/grub. Then you have to recreate /boot/grub/grub.cfg and restart the system. At this point systemd should start instead of openrc. Please read https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd for more informations.

Also, most modern desktops are not meant to be started via startx anymore, you have to give them a DBus session and maybe a couple of other things.
You better get through documentation for setting up systemd on your system at https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd#Booting_with_systemd
then just run:
$ systemctl enable gdm.service

and finally reboot your system, you will boot directly to gdm and from there, Gnome should work just fine.

Thank you! Both of you. Gentoo now runs on systemd, and I am able to fully use all of Gnome's features.
I bumped with a few issues though, like not having my network devices enabled after boot, but after looking on wiki.gentoo I just needed to execute the line "NetworkManager" while on a terminal with sudo rights. I do have to repeat this after each time I run Gentoo.
An other one is that I am only able to change my screen's brightness while logged to Root. If I use my account it simply won't do anything :?
Is there a .conf file I need to edit? It is kind of a drag having to log into root, change the brightness and then log into my user.

You probably need to issue the following command for automatically starting network manager every time at boot.
Code:
systemctl enable NetworkManager.service

Is your problem similar to this?

Thank you! Now my wireless adapter runs on boot.
And yes, it is similar to what is shown on that forum. But for me it the line "/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 325" doesn't work. It says the file doesn't exist...
If there is a workaround for this issue, I'd like to try it, but if not, then I suppose I can live with the whole "logging off and on to root and change brightness" deal

What do you mean by "logging off and on to root"? You should never log in as root to X. If you need root, use sudo or su to run specific programs as root.

On my system:

/usr/libexec/gsd-backlight-helper

Yeah, I've heard that from some folks in the lab I'm studying at, but for now I have not messed up anything, maybe newbies' luck? Eh, but I've been trying to set up my stuff so I can work using my account instead of going root.

The path I had to that application was different than in the forum, thanks!
Guess changing the screen brightness on a terminal isn't so bad compared to doing it on root.
