|
|
Hi there,
I recently upgraded my computer, 16GB RAM, 6700K CPU and the nVidia GTX 1070. I'm running a 4k monitor. However I'm seeing *terrible* performance my desktop environment (I'm usiing KDE plasma, but others aren't great either). I know the GPU is working as I can play a 3d game easily enough, and I can use the CUDA cores.
I've been trying to work out what the problem could be, even typing is laggy (almost as if typing over ssh or something). I tried both the 367.35 and .27 nvidia-drivers and I've seen the same problem with both. Not sure where to look next - any ideas?
Thanks,

Just tried it out - no improvement.
My monitor is actually running at 30Hz 4K (I have ordered a displayport cable that will enable me to run at 60Hz when it arrives), so it might be that is causing the problem. If I reduce the display resolution to QHD (1440p) then I see a huge improvement in "performance", though I'm not sure if that's because at QHD I'm able to run at 60Hz (is the difference between 30 and 60Hz that noticable??)
Thanks,

Yes, 30Hz is _terrible_. |

AFAIK it depends on the connection in use.
DP hdmi standers differ, some older standards of those only supports 30 hz in 4k resolution. maybe your screen does not support the correct standard, maybe wrong cable which i doubt, ...
I read quite often those notebook review homepages and this is a known feature, regardless of desctop or mobile gpu.
Check wikipedia for example on which type of HDMI or DP standard your hardware has.

well anything below 170 hz these days is crap, just kidding. I saw those gsync / freesync screens already support up to 150 / 170 hz vertical refresh rate.
...
honest answer: i assume you are a gamer, else you would not have a 1070 gpu. vertical refresh is not that important, as the time needed for changing those pixels. Good screens have 1 ms delay, crappy laptop screens 10ms and above. Please check notebookcheck on how this technical term is called
Some gamers are only happy when they have 70hz or more on the vertical refresh rate ...
For generic reference I suggest you read some notebook tests, only the screen and gpu parts, like notebookcheck and such

lower pixel count to be drawn per frame, lower screen resolution always gives better performance
4k, which is basically fake 4k resolution technically (see wikipedia for details why), ~3.8k resolution..., has much much more pixels. and those older dp and hdmi standards support higher vertical refresh for those 1440p resolution... also check wikipedia / notebookcheck whatever page gives a summary of standards vs supported vertical refresh rate / technical specs ...
...
the term performance is misleading.
some gpus have better performance in lower resoltuion because they are limited from the memory bandwith and the gpu memory.
thats the reason anything below 8 / 6 gb ram on gpu should not be bought anymore, a budget gamer should go for 4gb ram on gpu, and a desctop user or casual gamer only for 2gb of video ram, which is highly not recommended.
again notebookcheck recent article about nvidia pascal gpu vs amd ... technical talk ...

30hz / fake 4k resolution is fine when you want to do work related stuff. for gaming maybe nope
Also bear in mind, that the software is not optimized for 4k these days, you need to adapt a lot, do many changes in software to get a useable user expierence. the blueray resoltuion 1920x1080 (i think) is the defacto standard these days and the software is in my opinion optimized for this screen resolution. Because most notebooks have this resoltion. the cheap crap notebooks have something below usually. |

Ok so I bought a displayport cable and this completely resolved the issue - feels hundreds of times better, I'm sort of amazed that the difference between 30 Hz and 60 Hz refresh rate is so noticeable (the 30 Hz was unusable for anything really).
Thanks folks! _________________ Thunar-thumbnailers
