I want to use my laptop sitting on the desk next to my monitor as a second monitor.

Here's a short list of what I'm trying to accomplish:
- be able to "hotplug" the monitor, I don't want to add a dummy monitor to xorg that is always there. Something scriptable (nothing manual like fooling the videocard itself with resistors to think there is a second monitor)
- don't want to use DMX (http://dmx.sourceforge.net/) though if there is a clean way of toggling it I'll check it out.
- has to act like a real second monitor. mouse can enter/leave it, drag stuff to it, etc.
- don't really care how this is done (vnc/xpra/etc)

Some info - both are running up to date gentoo, both nvidia, both kde5, monitor is 1920x1200, laptop is 1920x1080, both will be gigabit wired.

I have done a fair amount of reading into this and for the life of me I can't find a decent way to do this. I tried the simple route of using xrandr/x11vnc but I could not disable panning (apparently nvidia drivers' doing). Synergy (http://gpo.zugaina.org/x11-misc/synergy) doesn't really do what I want. So any ideas would be appreciated.

Hey Saundersx,

I'm not sure, but maybe you'll find something usefull here: http://www.vanemery.com/Linux/XoverSSH/X-over-SSH2.html

You can send a whole Display via SSH to a other x server system. Maybe this would be something for you?

Ended up just going with a combination of synergy and xpra, not what I wanted but it will have to do.
