Ok I finally got my kde 4 back up and running on gentoo using the following guide: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE#Plasma_4

However when I switch to a dark theme for applications, everything takes the new theme EXCEPT for dolphin, the background stays white, and the filenames stay white.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I had the same problem. Dolphin 5 would follow the dark theme I used with the rest of my applications almost perfectly, except the background. I installed x11-themes/qtcurve with the qt5 flag enabled, then installed x11-misc/qt5ct.

I then launched qt5ct and set the style to qtcurve and the color palette to custom so that it would match what I use. Then I saved the color scheme as qtcurve-current. However, there's a color I cannot tweak. The background of the progress bar inside qt5ct's preview window stays white no matter what I do. Whatever setting is being used to color that progress bar in that preview is probably the same one Dolphin 5 is using for the background, and that makes Dolphin unusable, IMO, with dark themes. I have no idea if this behavior can be seen in Plasma 5 because I never upgraded from Plasma 4 yet. The only way I "solved" it was to downgrade back to Dolphin 4, because I was having problems accessing network shares and MTP devices in addition to theme issues with Dolphin 5.

There's btw also konqueror that you can use as file manager.
