Hello,
I have a gentoo host with a Windows 10 guest. VirtualBox crashes regularly. Seems to be graphics driver related (see segfault in libnvidia-glcore). Thanks for any advice regarding this issue.
dmesg after starting VirtualBox until crash:

Non-expert here, but I just fought through something like this on an Ubuntu host with Win10 a couple days ago. While I run gentoo with virtualization it's headless and I use kvm.
Question: Have you put in the VirtualBox extras and then not installed them, or had them in and uninstalled them, or upgraded VirtualBox but not upgraded the drivers in the guest?
The reason I'm saying is that my Ubuntu version was 15.10, which was out of support. So I upgraded it in the middle of my fight with VirtualBox (I'm unfamiliar with it altogether, not just with Windows VMs) and then I was getting hard lockups in my host system. No error message, no kernel panic, can't ping or ssh from another host to my Ubuntu host, can't switch to a virtual terminal.
For me this turned out to be an Ubuntu video driver not completely installed due to my ubuntu upgrade. But the error I got in VirtualBox is what got me wondering about it.
So I guess my non-expert recommendation is first to check your gentoo host system's video drivers, and then verify that the VirtualBox guest extras is installed and of the correct version. |

I was going to point out that the OP is on Gentoo, but the last post of the bug report points out that it's a cross-platform fix. |

Thanks for the replies. I installed app-emulation/virtualbox-extpack-oracle and verified that the version of app-emulation/virtualbox-additions installed in the Windows guest matches the version of VirtualBox. Unfortunately, there are still crashes occurring:
dmesg:
Code: |
[ 623.671206] vboxdrv: ffffffffa19df020 VMMR0.r0
[ 623.759378] vboxdrv: ffffffffa16c5020 VBoxDDR0.r0

|
In the few cases when it does not crash, I am experiencing display issues. The application showing the Windows guest is getting smaller and smaller (see multiple windows taskbars in screenshot): https://s32.postimg.org/i6jbkcskh/IMG_20160802_123809.jpg (11.8 kB)
Problems occur with and without having 3D acceleration enabled. |

OK so that gets back to the situation I had on the Ubuntu box. I had a driver half-installed wierdness which didn't manifest except when I was running VirtualBox.
I recommend that you re-emerge [edit: your drivers] and re-configure your video card. And then maybe reboot. |

Sorry, forgot to mention that in my previous post. I already reemerged the nvidia-drivers and redid the configuration. This did not help unfortunately.
But I think I found the cause of the problem. I am using xmonad and the graphics errors disappear if switch the VirtualBox window to floating mode and maximize it Which is a bit surprising to me, since I have the same software setup on a different computer and don't experience those problems there. The only significant differences between the computers are the graphics cards / drivers (nvidia vs radeon). |
