I'd give you a list of the files, but I'm not sure where gentoo keeps that file. I can see it in elogviewer/elogv, I just don't know how to get you a copy.

EDIT.

Found emerge log.

Do you have a /var/log/emerge.log file ? Some greps should give you this list.

The "minor" update contains udev, which is precisely supposed to populate /dev dynamically when a new device is detected.
Did you reboot your computer after this update ? If so, the new version doesn't work as well as the old one...

Perhaps it's time to switch from udev to eudev...

At the very least, eudev has a planned independent existence. The regular udev package has been subsumed into systemd, with the eventual goal of making it disappear and force migration to systemd. (explicitly stated, not my paranoid delusions)

So I updated to eudev and rebooted the computer. No joy.

Take a quick look at /lib/udev/rules.d and see if there is 69-libmtp.rules in there. Mine has these lines which are probably relevant:
Code:
69-libmtp.rules:# Samsung Galaxy models (MTP+ADB)
69-libmtp.rules:# Samsung Galaxy models (MTP)
69-libmtp.rules:# Samsung Galaxy models Kies mode

There are also other hit against Samsung in there. This file belongs to libmtp, which I would normally think of as photo-oriented. But "Kies mode" is clearly not a photo thing. I would have sworn that I added some udev rules by hand when I was first setting up my phone, but I don't see them any more.

Have you tried "tail -f /var/log/messages" (probably as root) when you plug the device in?

I believe there is something like "adb scan" that will see what it can find. On those rules I posted there were lines for MTP, MTP+ADB, and Kies (bootloader?). So one of those rules should have covered you.

If you run "ls -lrt /dev" do you see any new devices pop in?

Is this a case of no device, or a device under an unexpected name?

I need to flash my phone, so this is impetus to do it, hopefully tomorrow. I'll tail my log when I connect it.

Do you get any new devices when you plug the phone in?

The "cannot get freq at ep 0x84 " seems to be fairly common, and seems to be connected to video devices, but I haven't seen a good explanation of what it's about. There were plenty of hits, it probably just takes more exploring. I used "linux usb cannot get freq at ep 0x84 android" - without quotes, of course. The phone can show up as an mtp device - which is video related. At least some of the reports seemed to have function in spite of the messages, if I read correctly.

Have you tried running "adb devices"?

I think the easiest way to transfer files to and from an android phone is to install a file server app. By using WiFi connection there is no need for any USB connection at all

No. lsadb is masked in my system.

EDIT:

Installed lsadb

results from lsadb

bbox bruce2 # lsadb
lsadb: open(/dev/adb): No such file or directory

I don't have lsadb, I have the android sdk. Really, it's not the whole sdk, it's an installer for the sdk, so it's not as big as it sounds. I believe there's another way to get adb that doesn't involve the whole toolkit. I've never heard of "lsadb" until now. (That's "dev-util/android-sdk-update-manager", by the way.) There's also a "qtadb", but it is only a wrapper around adb, and doesn't have the command, itself. At the moment I don't remember the other package that contains the adb command. Just checking, and I see "dev-util/android-tools" - that might be the other one I've heard of.

OK, I flashed my phone this evening, and got a bit more opportunity than I had planned. First time I plugged it in, I got this:
Code:
Jun 12 14:57:33 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: new high-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
Jun 12 14:57:33 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8, idProduct=6860
Jun 12 14:57:33 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
Jun 12 14:57:33 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: Product: d2lte
Jun 12 14:57:33 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: Manufacturer: samsung
Jun 12 14:57:33 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: SerialNumber: e9520177
Jun 12 14:57:34 harvey kernel: cdc_acm 5-2:1.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
Jun 12 14:57:34 harvey kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_acm
Jun 12 14:57:34 harvey kernel: cdc_acm: USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters

At this point, adb didn't see the phone. Then I remembered that in late April my wife and I went to the UK, and as part of my security prep I turned off USB debugging - meaning adb access. So I turned it back on, replugged the phone, and:
Code:
Jun 12 16:50:55 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: USB disconnect, device number 9
Jun 12 16:51:05 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: new high-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd
Jun 12 16:51:05 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8, idProduct=6860
Jun 12 16:51:05 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
Jun 12 16:51:05 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: Product: d2lte
Jun 12 16:51:05 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: Manufacturer: samsung
Jun 12 16:51:05 harvey kernel: usb 5-2: SerialNumber: e9520177
Jun 12 16:51:05 harvey kernel: cdc_acm 5-2:1.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device

Interesting that enabling adb access actually made a few lines go away. I didn't see any action in /dev, which is a bit confusing. But that also made me think. You don't have adb installed, so what kind of access to your phone are you trying to get? Actually, I've only ever used adb to get to mine through USB. I use dropbox to get the photos out of it.

UPDATE:

I've still not got KDE to recognise my phone, but I have noticed that the program Calibre (ebook management software) does see the phone and the SDCard and I'm able to upload books to my phone. So what I've learnt is that this is a KDE issue and not a OS issue. Still don't know where to go from here, but it is one step in the right direction.
