hello

I install a brand new gentoo system but I can't launch startx. The profile is set to kde.

here is my error (this is the beginning of the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file)

Quote:

the directory /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d contains 2 files:

Quote:
20opengl.conf, which contains:
Section "Files"

Quote:
and radeon.conf, which contains:
Section "Device"
Identifier "radeon"
Driver "radeon"
EndSection

during the installation, I used genkernel, and I was told to remove legacy drivers, maybe I made a mistake (I removed some VGA support...). Here is one of the hints file I followed : https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide/fr, (see the section kernel modesetting).

thank you for your attention and for any help

olivier

PS:

I would like, in order to be coherent with an older post in this forum, that in the kernel settings, the option DRM_RADEON_UMS is set to "y" (there is a start in this line), and that I launch "startx" as my username, I mean not as root. I am in the video group.

but it is still not working.

here is make.conf:

EDIT:
I found it in the log file:

I will try if I find somewhat interesting in the kernel options.

I have some new stuff.
first, I have the kernels .config file : http://pastebin.com/TGQp8Z99

second, here is the error log file : http://pastebin.com/yVyCbtuz

I found the error, it is

Quote:
open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

in the log file, you can see in this that all the graphic drivers are loaded, then there is the error mentionned above, then they are unloaded.

but I can't figure out what it means...
I'm investigating.

lowley,

There are no errors in your post that account for your problem.

Please put the entire /var/log/Xorg.0.log onto a pastebin site and past the link.
Its too big for a forums post.

radeon.conf is not required. Xorg will work out for itself which open source driver is best for you.

lowley,

Code:
[  1759.348] (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
[  1759.348] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

As you posted, this means that you have a bit missing from your kernel.

Your graphics card is giveny by
Code:
[  1759.328] (--) PCI:*(0:1:0:0) 1002:5b62:1002:0f02 rev 0, Mem @ 0xe0000000/134217728, 0xefde0000/65536, I/O @ 0x0000dc00/256, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072
[  1759.328] (--) PCI: (0:1:0:1) 1002:5b72:1002:0f03 rev 0, Mem @ 0xefdf0000/65536

1002:5b62 is a v endor: 1002 ("Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]"), device: 5b62 ("RV370 [Radeon X600/X600 SE]")

The guide you linked is out of date in the kernel section. It was correct when it wan written.

Your kernel looks OK except for possibly
Code:
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_USERPTR is not set

I don't have easy access to a Radeon card to check.

I think I see what is the cause of the problem, and to avoid a long reading to other members, I created a new post for it.

it's here : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7949386.html#7949386

thank you

Look at https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon

Is this a PCIe card or an AMD APU (FM or FM2+ socket)?

I had a lot of trouble with my new APU, A8-7600, until the 4.7.0 kernel became available two days ago (yesterday for gentoo-sources).

The moderator should speak to this but I don't think you should be opening a new thread to respond to the same problem. Do you need help setting up pastebin? See https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/app-text/pastebinit or https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/app-text/wgetpaste

Hello,

I think the answer you give is not relevant for me. Indeed, a few days ago, I succeeded in launching kde & x, with the drivers "radeon & r300".
But it could obviously help someone else having the same problem.
Thanks ;-)

Why do you speak of pastebin problem? I used it a few times and did not noticed a problem! Don't you managed to read my links?

No. I didn't notice them buried in the other quotes. I thought you were opening another thread instead of using pastebin. Sorry.
