my attempts to run Plasma 5 on my laptop (which is just capable of OpenGL-1.3!) and to have it working at a sane speed have almost come to an end. It seems that it's not possible... (see my questions here:, here: and here: --> 'VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"' gives me a black screen, 'VIDEO_CARDS="vesa"' gives me KDE Plasma 5 but too slow to be really usable and - of course - a constant high CPU load).

But I like KDE (and begin to like even Plasma 5 with breeze  ) with its integration and interaction of it's tools and its flexibility to customize it. And I have to admit that I like the look&feel of Qt more than GTK's.
I already tried replacing kWin with openbox but that didn't work out in a good way (the taskbar vanished constantly and the system reacted only slightly faster as compared with kWin).

So before I start and try to re-organize applications like KMail, Konsole, KWrite and such in a less power-hungry DE like LXDE: Is there already something like a so-to-say 'KDE Plasma 5 light'? I don't want fancy desktop effects but I'd like to have the 'rest' of KDE Plasma (Qt but without the need of OpenGl-2.0, integration of its applications) - if that's possible.
Or am I alone with these wantings and have to choose a some window manager to which I can add Plasma's features (which one would be a good starting point for this?)

Thanks a lot,

First of all, did you actually disable compositing in plasma and did that change anything? Although generally the movement in the kde camp is to move graphics to the gpu, I thought that without compositing the desktop should still be usable. As you may have noticed already, fixing plasma in virtualbox generally meant disabling 3d support. (

As an alternative you could try LXQt. It also uses Qt and shares some things with kde, but is the next generation of LXDE, which was focused on old or slow hardware. Integration with kde components will however not be that good, as that generally is the part, that slows down kde.
