Hi

Been a long time since I was here! Looking to install Gentoo on a Power7 box in a logical partition hosted by an IBM i partition. Downloaded the only iso I could find from the site but it will not install. I have managed to install a copy of RedHat Enterprise with no problems so I know the process and set up are OK, but when I try to install Gentoo it refuses to see the boot image? The error is the image is not bootable.

The path to the image i am using is '/QOPT/CATALYST 20140713/boot/ibmpower' which is loaded in the DVD drive of the system. I have tried the yaboot file and it also fails to boot.

Anyone able to help me identify the issues? The set up is pretty complex due to the use of a HMC and hosted partitions, the terminal interface available is pretty primitive at best! So not going to be an easy fix..

Look forward to hearing from someone.

Chris...

Can't you get shell with RHEL install disk? That's all you need to install Gentoo.

I will take a look at that. I was hoping to have a distro that others could use fairly simply and not have to go through hoops to get an install running. I did try installing Gentoo on an older Power6 box and that simply states the image is not bootable, but the Suse image does boot, so it is definitely the boot image which is broken. The problem with the install is the IBM HMC console interface is not compatible with the YaST interface so while I can get a shell, trying to work with it is almost impossible. I will need to take a look at why at some time.

Thanks for your answer, I will look for information on how to carry that out. Maybe then I can create a boot image that works for others as well. (long time since I got this deep into Linux and Gentoo).

Chris..

What version of the RHEL install did you use? I am trying with the latest version and it complains about processor allocations (I am trying to install as a guest partition under IBM i host partition). I have logged problem with IBM but no joy from them at the moment.

Could you let me know your configuration and how you installed?

^ Sorry, you're replying to a spambot there. Who in their right mind would run RHEL 2 in 2016?
