I figure this might be worth sharing and save future people some headaches regarding all those weird hardware errors about hard drive or cabling issues, esp for drives on a sata pmp setup, that tell you something is failing but nothing is..

As I learnt after much pulling my hair out and changing/replacing hardware, the contacts on the back of the PCB on the hard drive which make contact with the wires for the motor and head data/power pins were all oxidized. After cleaning all the points on the hard disk PCB/s as well as all eSATA cable ends and ports, the errors disappeared and after 48 hours of abusing the drives they are fine, and these are 5 yr old drives all with 30,000+ power on hours on them.

Some pictures of the boards as I was cleaning them up. For the connectors on the drive as well as cables, I used a contact cleaner for gold plated contacts and scrubbed out the cable ends with a soft brass brush then did a couple rounds of washing the esata ports and running the cables in and out a few dozen times to remove any oxidization.

Hopefully this helps out anyone else in the future that has to deal with this ...

For the points on the PCB's using a pink eraser and contact cleaner (http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/cleaners/contact-cleaners/electrosolve-contact-cleaner-409b/) did the job, as well as re-tinning a few of the motor contact points that were degraded.
For the eSATA cables and ports, http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/cleaners/contact-cleaners/super-contact-cleaner-with-ppe-801b/, a soft bristled brass brush
To future proof.. coat ALL connectors/pots/PCB contact points with a good dielectric grease to keep air and moisture away from the connection so it won't oxidise anymore. http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/greases-and-lubricants/dielectric-grease/silicone-8462/, the automotive stuff Grote makes would probably work also.

Below are some of the wide variety of errors that I was getting..

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Documentation, Tips & Tricks.

Fits better here.

Many years ago it was popular to clean the grime off gold contacts with an "ink eraser" but I've not seen one of them in many years.
As you say, one or both of the contact surfaces have oxidised.

The real cause of the problem is that with vibration and thermal expansion/contraction the gold has been worn off at least one surface.
If it was still there, the surface would not oxidise.
The bad news is that this is only a temporary fix ... until the oxidation returns.
If you are really lucky, separating the parts to gain access to clean them, then putting them back together, will have disturbed things enough to result in new gold on gold contact, so you get another five years, otherwise 18 months will be good.

Over the years PCB vendors have got better at putting less and less gold on.

I don't see the issue coming back ever again here. Having applied the dielectric grease to the contact points and all other connections, air and moisture are no longer able to get at the connection and cause it to oxidise, esp since you have solder coated points on the HDD's PCB mating with aluminium and other dissimilar metals its going to go bad over time since the drives are not in a climate controlled room..

Assuming one buys cheap cables yes I can see the gold plating being thinned out, but otherwise a decent cable should last a long time unless your plugging/unplugging them constantly.

Anyways, hopefully this helps someone else out there as when I was trying to figure out what was wrong I dug up no end of other frustrated users on other forums going through the same thing with out much success..
