Hello guys!

I have installed a good working environment on the computer from signature (late G4).
It's working perfectly in console but I cannot understand how to run X.

In kernel options, "Direct Rendering Manager" is enabled and "Nouveau" is compiled.

lsmod yields "nouveau".
However, /dev/dri does not appear and thus graphics cannot start.

syslog contains some messages about nvidiafb but nothing about nouveau or nv.

When I try to unload nouveau, I get a message in dmesg "[drm] Module unloaded"; when it's loaded again, "[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810" it shown, but /dev/dri does not appear anyway.

What should I dig more here? :)
Thanks!

Are you sure it is Nvida, not Radeon? What is the output of lspci?

darikcr,

Welcome to Gentoo.

Its a bad sign that syslog contains some messages about nvidiafb.
nvidiafb must be off in the kernel or it takes control of the graphics chip and nouveau cannot.

nouveau gives you a framebuffer console at no extra charge, so you won't miss nvidiafb.

For completeness, all framebuffer drivers that try to control the hardware must be off.
You may get away with Simple Framebuffer or VESA Framebuffer (that may not be available on PPC) but they are not needed.
