I thought that either the emerged PDF viewer is kept or replaced. None of both happened here.
Is that 'how it is' or 'should be'?
Just in case: plasma-{meta,workspace,desktop}-5.6.2 are emerged. |

Plasma does not install any applications. Latest okular release is still kdelibs-4 based. |

Well, i followed the guide. Why isn't okular (KDE4 or not) kept then? |

The Plasma-5 guide only covers standard installs. In order to be able to upgrade to Plasma-5, various conflicting dependencies are removed from world file - that's what the 'Clean up @world' step is about. It deliberately has --pretend in the example so it is clear (and can be reviewed) which packages are lost in the process. Now, if you had previously installed KDE SC 4 via kdebase-meta or kde-meta, you are covered. However, okular is only (indirectly) pulled in via the latter, so it is possible that kdegraphics-meta (the package that would normally pull in okular on your system) was lost during the process. It would simply need manual re-install. |

Anyhow, I emerged kdegraphics-meta and okular is back.
Thanks for the (fast) reply! |

Hmm spectacle also would not come to your system with updating Plasma-5 - only if you then continue updating to ~arch Applications release 15.12.3 |

It didn't - despite having
Code: | $> emerge --info | grep -i accept
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" |
So emerging the meta packages by hand is the way to keep functionality as it was before? |

Before you had e.g. kde-meta which pulled in all of KDE (desktop+applications), and kdebase-meta (desktop + some applications). These only remain as legacy ebuilds for upgraders so they do not end up with a missing desktop accidentally.
Now this is split:
plasma-meta for the desktop, no applications
kde-apps-meta (no desktop) for _all_ the applications, or your own choice of smaller meta packages or single applications. More info is in the Gentoo KDE Guide.
This is covered in the next step after the Plasma upgrade: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE/Plasma_5_upgrade#Applications |
