I switched to the new KDE yesterday; transition worked fine, no bloopers no blocks.

I realized afterwards that they have ditched the feature that gets you
a different wallpaper for each virtual desktop.

I also do not like that they've moved all the customization stuff for Plasma
to /usr/share/ again but that' s beside the point.

Has anyone found a workaround? It should be possible with "activities"
but I do not see how.

EDIT: I decided to change my posting. I felt I was being unfair. There are a few
things that will correct themselves sooner than later and I miss the feature
with the wallpapers but all in all it´s the fastest KDE ever. I believe it´s a
terrific work.

When I use different activities I am able to have a different desktop. On my main activity I am using a slideshow. On another activity it has no slideshow. I haven't tested further.

Ah ... so there´s at least one virtual desktop that I can customize.
I remember the slideshow option but thought it might turn out to
become awkward. But thank you, I will try.

It seems as if the KDE people will not bring it back.
Can you confirm?

Hmmm. Well I just tested it and I can use different background images for different activities as well. So it isn't just slideshows.

I'm not sure about what KDE will do but I recall reading a few bug reports and forum posts (on the KDE forum) about it. I believe the official position is you can just use activities instead. Think there is even a way to map it so that every virtual desktop corresponds to a different activity as well, thus accomplishing the same thing. I'm not 100% sure about this or if it was there whether it still is. It's just something I thought I picked up once.

Nice avatar btw ... sounds a bit complicated. How can a wallpaper pose as an activity ?
Remove a bug or a function that´s considered to be buggy ( = different wallpaper for
different desktops ) and create sth illogical.

Plus there are quite a few inconsistencies, like GTK, so unpleasant, so retro,
so aesthetically displeasing... lack of qtcurve ...
but this is just the beginning I guess.

Unfortunately different wallpaper on each virtual desktop is an impossibility in Plasma 5. See the comments about different wallpapers and widgets on different virtual desktops under the heading 'Applets per virtual desktop and dashboard' in KDE developer Martin Gräßlin's post Some thoughts on the quality of Plasma 5.

Check your flags then, if you set systemsettings[gtk] you gain kde-gtk-config to setup your desired gtk+ theme to blend in to Plasma-5.

Thanks, I´ll get back to systemsettings for this.

@Fitzcarraldo
Yeah, I found a blog of one of the KDE people; I already know that I need not hold my breath.

It´s ok ... I changed my posting because I needed to be fair; all in all I like this KDE.

Not quite, you just set up different activities instead of virtual desktops and that enables you to choose different wallpapers.

Yes, genstorm, that's what it was about when I tried to configure it.
But I realized I'd rather use several virtual desktops instead and consequentially
just resign to the fact that the beloved feature from KDE 4 will not come back.
I will get used to it eventually.

As to the gtk themes: I only have Gnome Gtk theming in systemsettings,
although I do have kde-plasma/beeze-gtk and kde-plasma/kde-gtk-config installed.

Am I missing a package here?

I'm not sure where you see the huge difference? activities can just do more, but you get the same pager widget as for virtual desktops.

You don't have Breeze available for GTK2 and GTK3 design dropdowns?

Yes, on second look :?
That's much better.

But I have found another issue that came with the upgrade
and may be related to the new upower: system shuts down fine
but will not reboot, hangs on caching service dependencies.

Or that plasma 5 lists only one audio device which is called "default"
although nothing's been changed in kernel or in alsa.conf or in make.conf.
In systray I do have volume but I cannot do anything with it, no volume
change, no option to do sth with volume.
If I open alsamixer on the console everything is there.

Or that I cannot save the session any more which means I gotta
start my usual programs each time I boot up; every window be it
konsole or firefox or what I always use has to be opened again.
Kde 4 saved it so that everything was there.

Oh well.... I expected a few bugs with this upgrade. May find a few more
yet. Plasma 5 can only get better.
