I'm not that great with gdb, but the output is more or less useless since the tables are not available.

My supposition here is that your qt installation is broken. Have you tried running mplayer directly?

In any case, you should run emerge -av @preserved-rebuild then run revdep-rebuild since this is clearly a linking problem.

If that doesn't work you can try rebuilding smplayer and vlc. That usually fixes this type of problem, but you want to try to use portage tools first in case they are not the only broken applications.

mplayer alone works fine. gnome-mplayer is ok as well and I'm using it as an alternative.
emerge @preserved-rebuild and revdep-rebuild didn't make any difference, they are executed after each update btw.

I tried one more thing , just as an experiment - emerge e smplayer
Still no change.

The command should be emerge -e smplayer, but assuming that was a typo in your post then I am genuinely out of ideas. In my experience that away solves errors of this type.

One possibility that comes to mind is that maybe smplayer (and vlc) cannot handle both a qt5 and a qt4 use flag. Both of these programs run for me with just qt5 set.

Looking at the gdb output, removing qt4 support for vlc looks like it might be worth a try since they both mention qt4 components.

hm. smplayer was built with +qt5 -qt4. Building it with -qt5 +qt4 resolved the issue. I guess this will help with vlc as well.
