hello gentoo forums!

so i have gentoo up and running on my laptop, and xorg is starting up fine using all default configs - with TWM. i am an old fluxbox user, and was terribly dissappointed to see that flux isn't starting... i added 'exec startfluxbox' to .xinitrc and as soon as i see the screen turn black, right before the WM should start, the laptop barfs back to the framebuffer terminal and all i see is a series of "failed to read session" comments, seemingly indicating that fluxbox isn't seeing the menus and directories that it should work in. i do not have a .fluxbox directory either.

what am i doing incorrectly? i'll happily copy logs and terminal barf on request, i'm not seeing anything remarkable or it'd be here.

thanks for help, long live the ever helpful gentoo forums!

In case you were using a display manager, stop it and try if it works with startx.
In case it doen't work with startx, please patebin your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

So this is new - installed chromium, started TWM and tried to launch it. I get this (paraphrased) in dmesg:
Traps: compositortilew... invalid opcode... in libfreetype.so.6.11.4...

Xorg.0.log looks ok, no errors, and X is still running.

Is your fluxbox problem solved?

it is now! i'll explain.

sorry, i wasn't replying to the earlier post - i didn't refresh the page before posting my latest observation.

it turns out that freetype was installed without the X USE flag, so applications built using freetype weren't able to render fonts apparently. xorg wasn't showing the errors, and they weren't showing up in dmesg until i tried the trick with chromium inside TWM.

so now the typical xinitrc entry for fluxbox works, and i'm able to use these forums from within X in an actual browser, not links.

life is good.
