Mate 1.8 is happy to use OpenRC, but Mate 1.10 insists (in the standard build) on systemd
and pulseaudio. Does anyone know a way of running Mate 1.10 without systemd?

You do have USE=-systemd ?
Mate still doesn't look like it has any hard deps on systemd (mate-session-manager seems to have systemd optional but default), but posting the emerge tree with blocks in place (portage.mask systemd) would be helpful to debug.

I temporarily tried adding ~arch to my accept keywords and did not see systemd get pulled in along with emerge -p mate... So it should be possible to install without systemd.

I just installed MATE and it didn't insist on systemd.
Also there was no need to use -systemd.
I'm on ~amd64 if that matters.

dbus doesn't itself require systemd, there must be something requiring dbus with systemd support. My guess is that something is pulling in systemd that wants dbus with systemd support, and it's actually mate-session-manager wanting systemd when USE=systemd.

Thanks for the fast answer. Now the question remains, why mate-session-manager has systemd when my make.conf explicitly sets -systemd. But I'll see if I can find the culprit that somewhere sets systemd to active.
EDIT. Nope, that package does not have systemd; in fact all packages that are in the list have -systemd except for dbus, which has systemd.

well, you may want to try masking systemd, and see from the error on what's pulling it in...

You need an explicit "-gnome" in make.conf/USE. Not having "gnome" in there is not enough.
The problem is that mate 1.10 pulls in a few Gnome 3 deps that in turn cause systemd and PA to be pulled in. emerge -d is very useful, if verbose.
Also recommend to disable the webkit use flag for zenity (unless you are happy with post-1.8.3 webkit and a large number of deps, like ruby).
The only blocker I haven't been able to resolve is

Aha, -gnome helped.
I'm now having the same blocks as you, Princess.
For the gtk+ blocker you obviously need to upgrade gtk+from 3.16 to 3.18.
Now merging MATE 1.10.

This is not true, I didn't have -gnome and I installed MATE fine, without any blocks.
I was on Cinnamon when I emerged MATE (Cinnamon pulled some gnome3 stuff) , maybe if some other DE is used, like KDE or XFCE things could go a different route. |

Nah, I'm on 1.10, like I said before... I have ~amd64 in make.conf, so everything is unstable
Which might be the reason why I had no problems. |

On that test machine I tried, I also have USE=-gnome (and -kde and -qt4) which allowed merge of 1.10 without systemd. Alas looking at the mess of my per package USE flags I'm not sure which may have a side effect of allowing a clean merge tree for mate...
I likewise tested with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 .
Might need to clean up useflags.

Why do you need USE=-gnome? What is default enabling it that pulls in systemd or whatnot? Can you check with emerge .. --tree or something? I don't think we need to default enable these things to need an explicit disable when it interfers with a good experience to MATE. But given the information, I can't quickly figure out what IUSE default on gnome is doing it.

| I thought I'd be able to tell you straight away, but no, need to wait until I can check my home machine. The machine I'm using right now has no -gnome USE flag set, and yet doesn't request systemd for mate-1.10, just like in kajzer's case. OTOH it hasn't seen any portage updates in months... |

For me I just wrote that I had USE=-gnome to invalidate my results as this machine was meant to be mostly headless and didn't want a full DE on it.
On another machine that I run xfce on, I ran into a block on dev-util/gdbus-codegen; but I didn't go debug that. Likely completely unrelated to the issue at hand.

Only thing with that that I can imagine would be that it has to be in sync with dev-libs/glib, so if you mess with keywords on one and not the other, there'll be such trouble

What it did want to do, was pull in a bunch of other packages I don't want, like net-wireless/wireless-tools, media-libs/gstreamer and all of its plugins, mate-extra/mate-netbook, app-cdr/brasero, etc. Maybe I should go about making a mate-lite package when 1.10 does go stable (on second thought, looking through the list, I just noticed mate has an extras USE flag and disabling that gets rid of a lot of the junk I don't want). |

The problem seems to be with virtual/dbus setting the systemd flag, but
I can't find out where this flag is set. Not by udev or libudev, anyway.
