Hi guys

So I updated my system (update world), which worked fine. Then I upgraded Qt to 5.5 (as it's not in my world file), and now sddm won't start. I rebuilt it after the Qt upgrade, but all it shows is a blank screen with a white cursor at the top left of the screen. I've tried adding sddm user to the video group, no change, and now I'm wondering if somehow I need to rebuild Qt with the gles2 useflag enabled? Thanks for your help

I've found this happens when I have the incorrect OpenGL implementation selected. What's the output of eselect opengl list?

You can also find out more about what's going wrong in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/sddm.log. It could be that there is no problem with SDDM, but Xorg is unable to start for some reason.

Code:
sddm-helper exited with 6

There's the problem.

I had this exact problem but cannot remember the particular solution. It appears to be caused by a number of things.

Does the sddm user's home directory exist? You can find out the home directory using grep sddm /etc/passwd | cut -d':' -f6. On my system it is /var/lib/sddm.

Also check the permissions:
Code:
ls -la /var/lib/sddm/
total 24
drwxr-xr-x  5 sddm root 4096 Feb 12 23:26 .
drwxr-xr-x 33 root root 4096 Feb 16 01:44 ..
drwxr-xr-x  3 sddm sddm 4096 Feb 10 08:39 .cache
drwx------  3 sddm sddm 4096 Feb  6 09:17 .dbus
drwx------  3 sddm sddm 4096 Feb 12 23:26 .nv
-rw-r--r--  1 root root  292 Feb  6 18:33 state.conf
-rw-------  1 sddm sddm    0 Feb 17 08:58 .xsession-errors

Yes, I'd found that other thread too. And tried what it suggested, except re-compiling Qt with gles2 enabled (due to the time it takes). I'll do that now and see what happens...

Try rebuilding sddm - Qt 5 upgrade can break things sometimes.

I've had Qt 5 installed for a while before installing SDDM and just did a complete rebuild after upgrading to GCC 5.3 so I don't think that could have caused the problem I was experiencing.

FWIW I have Qt 5 installed without the gles2 or egl USE flags set and it's working OK for me. Maybe a rebuild of SDDM is all that's needed in this case.

No, I rebuilt SDDM a few times already. But I messed up even more parts of my system so I'm considering to start over anyway (I'm still using a backup of the old system, thanks to BTRFS subvolumes :D ). Anyway, thanks for your help. I guess by starting over I'll end up with a much cleaner system that's easier to debug...
