hmdi is card0 and dmix doesn't work with hdmi
while you are aware of it, this is not correct, just because PHC is not PCH and i don't think it's the right way to do it.

refer to https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA#Laptops_with_HDMI_audio_output (and html5 doesn't play section also) for the correct format.

Wow, thanks for replying with the (correct) answer so quickly!

That was, in fact, the problem with the setup: sound is now working. Always useful to have a second set of eyes to check for typos and dumb mistakes!
