That demo on youtube seems dated. The latest version of gnome-light is using gnome-3.16 or 3.18. Gnome after around 3.8 are designed to use systemd, which is a fairly large paradigm shift. Gnome under Gentoo is similar to any other Gnome distribution and is basically supported only if you use systemd (you're pretty much on your own with the forums if you want to avoid systemd). If you want to use systemd, there's https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd you can look at for more information.

The demo seems a little TLDW to me, but there is one thing that may make your install easier:

# eselect profile list
# eselect profile set 5 (or whatever the one desktop/gnome/systemd shows up)

With the desktop/gnome/systemd profile, this will make building Gnome a lot easier.

But backing up a bit, I don't think you even need Gnome to install Compiz and thus can avoid systemd. You can install Xorg by itself. You could start with emerging the metapackage xorg-x11 (Note: ignore the gnome stuff above). Then try merging compiz... Start with https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Compiz however I've never used this before.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Desktop Environments, as implicitly requested.
