I have a gnome setup and my on board audio card will play audio and I can get the microphone to work with the gnome settings.
I am going to record with recordmydesktop but when I plug inthe microphone I get the following errors.
I can record with no sound input. I have tried the line-in and the microphone jack.
lspci:
00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
Any ideas?
$ recordmydesktop
Initial recording window is set to:

Adjusted recording window is set to:
X:0 Y:2 Width:1440 Height:896
Your window manager appears to be GNOME Shell
Detected compositing window manager.
Reverting to full screen capture at every frame.
To disable this check run with --no-wm-check
(though that is not advised, since it will probably produce faulty results).
Initializing...
Buffer size adjusted to 4096 from 4096 frames.
Couldn't open PCM device hw:0,0
Error while opening/configuring soundcard hw:0,0
Try running with the --no-sound or specify a correct device. _________________ Without diversity there can be no evolution:)
