Hello guys, I am once again in need of your wisdom.
I cannot get X started, I have been trying to figure this problem out for a while with no success.

X fails to start HP Laptop DV6T-6c00 intel HD Graphics 3000

I have a good clean running install of gentoo with no errors, I however cannot get X to run,
I have compiled the kernel manually and using genkernel a few times and still same result X will not start.
I see errors but I'm not sure which are pertinent.
I may not be able to see the forest, please help.
Thank you in advance.

suggest emerge twm xterm xclock and then run startx . If you get three windows and a movable mouse pointer X is working but your window manager/display manager/desktop is not. enter exit in the left window to return to CLI

I emerged twm xterm xclock and then run startx to satisfy your test however, it worked as you said. I still cannot start X and see a kde desktop. I dont think my intel Graphics 3000 Driver or module are loading.
I am braindead here, what should I do next?

Thank you

Here is the output from startx

A few things to check.

Your 2nd attempt does not look right, it's talking about Xorg.1.log, display :1. Are you looking at the right log?

I'm used to using configuration files under /etc/X11. Not sure why it is looking under /use/share.

Maybe make sure your .xinitrc file is what you expect and check your arguments.

kde desktop is the item that is not loading

run ls /etc/X11/Sessions
There should be a reference to some kind of kde,
run nano /etc/env.d/90xsession
edit to XSESSION="the exact reference to some kind of kde you found above"
run nano /etc/conf.d/xdm
Should say DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
See https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE/Troubleshooting#KDM_fails_to_start

Assuming you are using openrc not systemd and installed kde using https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE

xinitrc may well be the problem source; found at : /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/00-xhost
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/40-libcanberra-gtk-module
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/50-systemd-user.sh
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/80-dbus
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/90-consolekit
/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc
/home/<your user names>/.xinitrc

run kdm as root and as user instead of startx; what happens?

IMHO xorg configuration is not the problem, the following extracts from man xorg may help explain the xorg questions raised above:

Configuration

Xorg typically uses a configuration file called xorg.conf and configuration files with the suffix .conf in a directory called xorg.conf.d for its initial setup. Refer to the xorg.conf(5) manual page for information about the format of this file.
Xorg has a mechanism for automatically generating a built-in configuration at run-time when no xorg.conf file or xorg.conf.d files are present. The current version of this automatic configuration mechanism works in two ways.

The first is via enhancements that have made many components of the xorg.conf file optional. This means that information that can be probed or reasonably deduced doesn't need to be specified explicitly, greatly reducing the amount of built-in configuration information that needs to be generated at run-time.

The second is to have "safe" fallbacks for most configuration information. This maximises the likelihood that the Xorg server will start up in some usable configuration even when information about the specific hardware is not available.

The automatic configuration support for Xorg is work in progress. It is currently aimed at the most popular hardware and software platforms supported by Xorg. Enhancements are planned for future releases.

Files

The Xorg server config files can be found in a range of locations. These are documented fully in the xorg.conf(5) manual page. The most commonly used locations are shown here.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Server configuration file.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf-4
Server configuration file.
/etc/xorg.conf
Server configuration file.
/usr/etc/xorg.conf
Server configuration file.
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf
Server configuration file.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
Server configuration directory.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d-4
Server configuration directory.
/etc/xorg.conf.d
Server configuration directory.
/usr/etc/xorg.conf.d
Server configuration directory.
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d
Server configuration directory.
/var/log/Xorg.n.log
Server log file for display n.
/usr/bin/*
Client binaries.
/usr/include/*
Header files.
/usr/lib/*
Libraries.
/usr/share/fonts/X11/*
Fonts.
/usr/share/X11/XErrorDB
Client error message database.
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/*
Client resource specifications.
/usr/share/man/man?/*
Manual pages.
/etc/Xn.hosts
Initial access control list for display n.

Phredus,

Since you can get twm, three xterms and a clock running, which is Xorg using the default xintrc, we can be sure that Xorg works.
You may be able to make it work better but thats for later after it runs the desktop you want.

With
Code:
[ 23629.198] (EE) /dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: Permission denied
you will have no hardware acceleration.
This does not stop Xorg from working but some desktop environments won't run without it.
Code:
[ 23629.750] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

This may be a bug in xf86-video-intel which has been fixed in the testing driver.
Code:
$ eix xf86-video-intel
* x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel
     Available versions:  ~*2.9.1 2.19.0 2.20.13 2.21.15 (~)2.99.903 (~)2.99.905-r1 (~)2.99.906 (~)2.99.907-r1 (~)2.99.909 (~)2.99.910 (~)2.99.914 (~)2.99.916 2.99.917 (~)2.99.917-r1 (~)2.99.917-r2 {debug dri glamor (+)sna +udev uxa xvmc}
     Homepage:            http://xorg.freedesktop.org/
Description:         X.Org driver for Intel cards

Keyword x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel then
Code:
emerge -1av xf86-video-intel

Be sure you are upgrading to version 2.99.917-r2.
Test again.

Thank you guys, I'm in, Xorg is running, xdm is running and kde is running, but I dont know what made it work, here is what I did so far.

I changed /etc/conf.d/xdm from DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" to DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm". (I did this back and forth a few times in the past with no success). But its working now.

    # /etc/init.d/xdm start

Code:

Just in case it means something: startkde does not work:

Code:

$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

    Also startx does not work:

Code:

    I Re-Installed: x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917 I dont know if it is version "-r2".
I don't think I got ACCEPT_KEYWORDS: x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel Correct, Please let me know which file it goes in.

Code:
# emerge -1av xf86-video-intel --ask
!!! INVALID ACCEPT_KEYWORDS: x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917::gentoo  USE="dri sna udev -debug -uxa -xvmc" 0 KiB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 KiB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

I found this in "/etc/conf.d/modules". I dont know what the stuff on the bottom of the file is but I think it may be causing some of the errors I'm getting on boot and in xdm.
Code:
# modules/3.18.12-gentoo/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko
### modules="i915"
modules="i915"
# You can define a list modules for a specific kernel version,
# a released kernel version, a main kernel version or just a list.
# The most specific versioned variable will take precedence.
#modules_2_6_23_gentoo_r5="ieee1394 ohci1394"
#modules_2_6_23="tun ieee1394"
#modules_2_6="tun"
#modules_2="ipv6"
#modules="ohci1394"

# You can give modules a different name when they load - the new name
# will also be used to pick arguments below.
#modules="dummy:dummy1"

# Give the modules some arguments if needed, per version if necessary.
# Again, the most specific versioned variable will take precedence.
#module_ieee1394_args="debug"
#module_ieee1394_args_2_6_23_gentoo_r5="debug2"
#module_ieee1394_args_2_6_23="debug3"
#module_ieee1394_args_2_6="debug4"
#module_ieee1394_args_2="debug5"

# You should consult your kernel documentation and configuration
# for a list of modules and their options.

I will fix it and try again and report back. Thank you for all the help so far.

It isn't.

That's not the way to install masked packages. You can set the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS variable on the emerge command line (to prevent upgrading all your system with unstable packages :P ), or edit your package.keywords file.

Yes you can do that but portage will forget all about it and downgrade things for you next update.
Its ok if you want to --pretend to see what would happen but thats all.

Editing package.keywords is the right way to allow a testing package into a stable system.

Code:
$ startkde
does not start Xorg.

startx needs ~/.xinitrc to be setup.
Its trying to run the system default xinitrc here.

Taken together if you create ~/.xinitrc with the entry startkde (you may need more) then startx will attempt to startkde rather than the default.

Your modules file has some rubbish at the end but is otherwise syntatically correct.

Hi guys, I found the same sort of gibberish in my "/etc/conf.d/hostname" file.
Does anyone do you know what this is?
Code:

# Set to the hostname of this machine
hostname="dv6gn2"
^[:q^Mhostname<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kb<80>kbhostname="dvgn2"<80>kl<80>kl<80>kl<80>kl6<80>kr<80>kr<80>kr<80>kr<80>kr<80>kr<80>kr<80>kr<80>kr<80>kr^[:wq^M^[^[:wq^M^[:q!^M

I'm still working on the other items but I wanted to ask since it may be pertinent.
Thank you

Phredus,

Its not so much what it is, its now it got there.

It looks like something horrible my have happened to your root filesystem an some time.
/etc/conf.d/hostname is something you set up and leave for the life of the install, so it not like this file is ever opened for writitng.

Thanks guys,

I updated the video drivers and the issue with the gibberish in the config files was only on hosts file and the make.conf, I removed it and have not seen any issues.
I ran kdm as root and got a kde login prompt, this issue is solved.
