I know that Plasma is still very much in development (ie: masked in portage) however I'm finding that there are features on my Kubuntu laptop install that are not in the Gentoo install. The two main ones I'm looking at are the folder view for the desktop (the drop down is grayed out and set to the default 'Desktop' - I cannot figure out how to enable the feature elsewhere) and KDE Connect (this seems to be very much in development, but I can't find an ebuild for plasma (there is a kde 4* version, though).

The first bit is interesting, indeed I can't switch to folder view myself - curious what's missing. However, kdeconnect simply does not have a kf5-based release yet, so one would need to build it from git. Live ebuilds are only to be found in kde overlay, not in the tree - I find it builds reliably and works fine.

I don't think that kdeconnect is in the overlay, or at least I can't find it anywhere. I'll try GIT and see if I can get that running.

@genstorm Wow, didn't know of that command. I'm going to have to read through it's man page. Thanks for the thought.

I may have a lead on the first one too. It seems that my plasma 5 install is part plasma 5 and part kde 4. I'm uninstalling the kde4 components I can find and will try to replace them with plasma 5 as best as I can. I'll post an update once I've pursued this further.

Fun fact! Folder view desktop works after you actually add a folder view widget to the regular desktop.

Well, almost gorked my computer on that experiment. It seems that there remain some 4.*.* packages which must remain on my system to some capacity, but otherwise plasma 5 is about as installed as it gets. I can verify that adding the folder view widget allows me to select the folder view desktop setup (and remains even when I remove the widget afterward, though I'll see how it functions after a restart)

do you have "widgets locked" (don't know the English text as I'm running German)?
In my case unlocking made the select box selectable.

Best regards,
Andreas

I did, and unlocking seems to do the trick for me too. This is an interesting and subtle change from 4.x. That would also explain why adding the folder view widget made it work (Because I had to unlock the widgets for that too).
