Upgrade to latest plasma 5 desktop last night and it is broken.

When logging in, the splashscreen just stays up forever, covering everything.
Not even the mouse pointer is visible, (except anyuwhere the splah screen is not covering)

plasma 5 is running, but unusable.

I have found a workaround:

# killall ksplashqml

Not sure yet what the actual fix for the problem is.
I created a new user to test, and my new user was able to login the first time only. A subsequent login got the same frozen splashscreen as the existing users.

Hi daddio
You can first try disabling the splash screen in the config file of ksplash, like this:
Code:
~ $ cat /home/kikko/.config/ksplashrc
[KSplash]
Engine=none
Theme=None
If this doesn't changes anything, you can also
  • try working on kwinrc file
  • see if there is some useful message in $HOME/.xsession-errors

Regards

PS: in an old KDE4 bug, a user was experiencing the same issue; it happened to be related to Intel card drivers update. Maybe it's worth checking ;)

.xsession-errors may or may not have anything interesting... (lots of output)

However, in process of trying to view .xsession-errors on another terminal, I may have stumbled across
something important.

When I immediately switched to a text console, ksplash finished successfully, but my monitors are in a low-resolution mode.
On a subsequent login (still at that low-res mode), ksplash finihes successfully.

When I switch the resolution back to native (my two monitors have different native resolution, maybe thatst the problem), ksplash hangs.
NOTE: ksplash hangs after successfully switching modes, but the ksplash images do not resize.

daddio@diplodocus ~ $ eix kde-frameworks/plasma
[I] kde-frameworks/plasma
Available versions: (5) (~)5.14.0(5/5.14)^t (~)5.15.0(5/5.15)^t
{X debug doc egl opengl test}
Installed versions: 5.15.0(5)^t(07:51:15 AM 10/14/2015)(X doc opengl -debug -egl -test)
Homepage: https://www.kde.org/
Description: Plasma framework

Nothing weird.
Perhaps, as kikko suggests, its a problem with my r600 based RV730?

I'm going to see if I can find anything on kde's bugtracker... but its a mess of zombie bug reports (e.g. from 2007).

I'm a little embarrassed to post the solution .

First #emerge update pulled in a new version of plasma.
But this new version still had th eproblem with ksplash.
I ran # emerge --depclean
and it uninstalled some kde-base items I thought I had gotten rid of already (as well as konsole, and dolphin, which I thought I
had protected from being uninstalled).

Now it works. :/

:oops:
