Good evening!

I've been away from Gentoo for a very long time and I'm trying to set up 2 machines. My first install went well until I tried to start xfce. Here is the output of startx:

Rizz0-Built ~ # startx

Hi,

Apart from running startx as a regular user, can you post /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?
And lspci output ?

Alex.

FrankRizz0,

Running X as root is a very bad thing but its not your problem.

Code:
(II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.

says that your kernel does not support Kernel Mode Setting.

Code:
List of video drivers:
ati
radeon
all work without an xorg.conf, so don't use one for testing.
You will get a USA keymap and a right handed mouse. That can be fixed later.

Also, that was after I took KMS out of my kernel.

I found an old topic that used fglrx as the driver and it worked, I changed my VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx", did emerge --changed-use --deep @world and still the same error.

Do you install firmware for your card? Your card requires this firmware:
Code:

No, that was not available in the kernel, and after that I had no idea what to do next so I skipped it. If this is what it takes to get my card going please post a how-to, thanks.

FrankRizz0,

You cannot set up the kernel to support both radeon and the ati binary blob.

Choose which one you will use and we can take it from there.
To have both drivers and switch between them requires two kernels - one for each driver.

Meanwhile, pick one.

Please install wgetpaste to post things like Xorg.0.log and your kernel .config

Hi Neddy,

I don't remember setting up the ati binary blob. I'd like to stick with the radeon drivers :-)

FrankRizz0,

The Wiki covers it fairly well.
There are three pieces.

    A kernel piece.
    An Xorg driver
    Firmware

You need all three pieces. To avoid complications with firmware, set <M> Radeon in the kernel.

Make friends with wgetpaste too. Your kernel config will not fit in a post and we may well be asking for it later.

[code=Xorg.0.log][ 185.321] (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
[ 185.321] (EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.[/code]
tells that your kernel support is not correct.

Yeah I followed the wiki to install it, I will review how I built the kernel again, and I will also go through the xorg again. The firmware is just emerge. I'll let you guys know.

FrankRizz0,

Put your kernel .config file onto a pastebin site and tell us the link.

FrankRizz0,

Your kernel has
Code:
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y
which can be made to work but you need to include the firmware in the kernel too.
That goes into
Code:
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE=""
which is presently empty and another currently hidden kernel option.

There are four combinations from CONFIG_DRM_RADEON and CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE but only two will work.
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m and CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="" will load firmware from /lib/firmware.
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y and CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="<list of files>" builds the Radeon kernel driver and its <list of files> into the kernel.
The firmware must be available when radeon initialises.

Its easier to set CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m until it works because dmesg will tell the firmware you need, and its a reboot to test with different firmware.
With CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y its a kernel rebuild, as the firmware is in the kernel.

If you feel lucky, rebuild the kernel including your firmware. If not, rebuild your kernel with CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m.

Do check
Code:
uname -a
before and after the build. It shows a time/date. This is the build time/date of the running kernel.
After the rebuild and reinstall, it should be different (more recent) if you are actually using your new kernel.

Rebuilt the kernel as instructed, but it still points to yesterday's build :-/

Edit: Not sure how to change it to today

FrankRizz0,

You messed up the kernel install.

Did you mount /boot ?
Did you update grub to see the new kernel?

So I'm running into an issue that I have no idea how to fix. I installed KDE on my office system and the DM won't start. No idea how to fix this, I used the KDE wiki so if there's a step missing , that would be the only thing I could think of. Here's the Xorg log:

FrankRizz0,

Code:
[    42.527] (EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

That says that Xorg started normally, found nothing to do, so it exited normally.

What Display Manager are you trying to use and how are you trying to use it?

FrankRizz0,

You need an ~/.xinitrc file that tells Xorg how to start KDE.

By default, Xorg vill try to run three xterms and an analogue clock in twm, but note of that is installed.
Type startkde at the shell prompt.

If that works. try
Code:
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --exit-with-session startkde
in ~/.xinitrc
Then startx.

OK so it looks like I missed a step with KDE, and this was the error:

Code:

Rizz0-Built ~ # systemctl enable kdm
Operation failed: No such file or directory

So I assumed that this was systemd? I installed systemd, configured kernel and same result

FrankRizz0,

Does KDE need systemd now ?
I thought it was only Gnome.
