The sys-crypt/gcr package is a dependency for the web browsers I want to install, namely midori and epiphany.

I solved this issue by rebuilding the entire OS using:
Code:
emerge -e world


The problem has gone away. Not sure what caused it.

This solution did not work for me...
i had to remove the "introspection" USE flag for the gcr package to make it compile.
