Hi,
On one of my laptop I have a fresh installation of Gentoo where I use wicd for wifi connection. I used to have wicd on this laptop 2 years ago (an old Gentoo installation) and it used to work fine, the same on other laptops -> installing wicd was just enough.
This time I have strange problems, and I am not sure where are connected to:
[1] First of all wicd couldn't start:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1030124-highlight-.html
but this /etc/init.d/dbus start solved the problem
[2] but when wicd started during kde was starting it always was asking for root passwords - no like my other workstations, as it started automaticly.\
[3] After that I had a message there was an error during start and wicd will be switched off, but after 10-20 second I could see an Internet is working - very starnge
[4] I have tried sollution form Gentoo Wiki:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Wicd
but after rc-update add wicd default and reboot the system KDE could not start, I had such message on konsole:
Quote: | No protocol specified

Where is the problem - with wicd or with dbus or with rc-update?

I found this on arch forum:
Quote: | Finally, this issue has been solved. The solution is very simple, but it took months for me to notice that. The hostname of the machine eventually happens to be unset, i don't know how and why. While there is no hostname (or hostname is empty string), the error described above comes, until i reset the original hostname manualy. |

So I did this again:
Quote: | One of the choices the user has to make is name his/her PC. This seems to be quite easy, but lots of users are having difficulties finding the appropriate name for their Linux PC. To speed things up, know that the decision is not final - it can be changed afterwards. In the examples below, the hostname tux is used within the domain homenetwork. |
Gentoo Wiki
Host and domain information
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/System#Networking_information
and it works fine
