Hello, I have an Acer Aspire V3-371-39MA notebook, which works great with kernel 4.0.5. However, when I try to upgrade to kernel 4.2(.1) the touchpad is not recognized anymore. I tried both the gentoo-sources and the vanilla-sources.

Under kernel 4.0.5 I get these messages, maybe they help diagnosing the problem:
Quote:

i2c_hid i2c-SYN1B7F:01: failed to retrieve report from device.
i2c_hid i2c-SYN1B7F:01: failed to retrieve report from device.
i2c_hid i2c-SYN1B7F:01: failed to retrieve report from device.
i2c_hid i2c-SYN1B7F:01: failed to retrieve report from device.
i2c_hid i2c-SYN1B7F:01: failed to retrieve report from device.
...
hid-multitouch 0018:06CB:2991.0001: input,hidraw0: <UNKNOWN> HID v1.00 Mouse [SYN1B7F:01 06CB:2991] on

Under kernel 4.2.1 I do not get any message about i2c_hid or hid-multitouch... I do not really know where to go from here on.

Any idea would be welcome!

Turn on CONFIG_X86_INTEL_LPSS, CONFIG_I2C_DESIGNWARE_PLATFORM, CONFIG_I2C_DESIGNWARE_PCI, CONFIG_I2C_HID.
Use / to find them in make menuconfig.

P.S. Hope you'll find this thread useful.
P.P.S. Seems like CONFIG_I2C_DESIGNWARE_PCI is really needed. I posted kernel config in the thread above. No more glitches on my laptop.
P.P.S. Ok, after long expermenting at last found it out: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7839404.html#7839404. Designware is not needed, the correct driver is psmouse. To make it load use i8042.nopnp, to make it work correctly use psmouse.proto=imps. CONFIG_X86_INTEL_LPSS, CONFIG_I2C_DESIGNWARE_PLATFORM, CONFIG_I2C_DESIGNWARE_PCI should be turned off. This is at least the case for my laptop. If you have different model, the solution can be different.
